On October 14, Ukraine national team hosted Portugal in Kyiv

A draw would have secured Andriy Shevchenko's men a place in the Euro 2020 finals, while victory would mean advancing there from the top spot. After the match vs Lithuania, Ukraine’s coach made a few changes in the squad, with Pyatov, Kryvtsov, Matviienko, Stepanenko, and Marlos still appearing from the off.

Great start

The start was optimal for the hosts thanks to an early goal: Marlos delivered a corner, Patricio parried away Kryvtsov's header, with Yaremchuk finishing it off just on time. Then the Portuguese took the initiative, forcing the opponents to defend. Still, instead of an equaliser, the current European champions conceded another one after Mykolenko perfectly fed Yarmolenko with a cross from the left wing, making it 2-0. Then, Pyatov coped with the dangerous attempts by Joao Mario and Bernardo Silva, with Cristiano Ronaldo firing it wide from outside the penalty area. We want to mention that Stepanenko was booked midway through the first half.

Pyatov VS Ronaldo

After the break, Ronaldo bombarded Pyatov’s goal with several more attempts (both free-kick ones and open-play ones) only to see Andriy showcasing his great reflexes. In the 63rd minute, one Shakhtar footballer was replaced by another Miner - Konoplyanka came on for Marlos. Yevhen could have immediately found himself one on one with Patricio, but he failed to get clear of Pepe. In the 72nd minute, Stepanenko threw himself towards Bruma’s shot, with the ball hitting his hand and causing the second yellow card and a spot-kick which was coolly converted by Ronaldo. With Ukraine being short-handed, Kovalenko replaced Yaremchuk. In the dying stages, the Yellow-and-Blues experienced some tough time with the Portuguese giving their all in an attempt to reverse it, but the magnificent Pyatov stopped an attempt by Bruno Fernandes and made a low super save after Ronaldo’s header attempt. And in the very end, Danilo hit the crossbar.

2-1 – Ukraine secured a top spot in the qualifying group B and advanced to the Euro 2020!
