First meeting on the European stage

Israeli football leaders

Maccabi Tel-Aviv are the reigning Champions of Israel, the oldest (founded in 1906) and the most decorated club in the country. The Yellows have won 24 Israeli league titles, 23 domestic Cups and seven Super Cups. They rank 70th according to the UEFA club coefficients.

Since the summer, the team have been managed by the 51-year-old Greek coach Giorgos Donis who previously worked at Panathinaikos FC. The Yellow ones play their home matches at the Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv having a seating capacity of 29,400.

European competitions

Maccabi Tel-Aviv started their European club cup journey in the Champions League qualifying round where they alternately defeated Riga (2-0), Suduva (3-0) and Dinamo Brest (1-0). In the knockout stages of the tournament, the Israelis lost to Salzburg (1-2 and 1-3) and got to the Europa League. There, in the group featuring Villarreal (0-4 and 1-1), Sivasspor (2-1 and 1-0) and Qarabagh (1-0 and 1-1), they finished second.

Aggregately, the club has had 11 games in the current European campaign (six wins, two draws and three defeats). The goal difference is 14-12. The top scorers in European competitions are Dan Biton and Nick Blackman, each netting three goals; and the most prolific goal+assist player is Dor Peretz who scored a goal and provided three assists.
It will be important for us to score at home, so we’ve got to be aggressive offensively, and only after that we should properly prepare for the return leg. It will be a very good experience for us and we will do our best to worthily represent Maccabi in this clash
Manager Giorgos Donis:

“Shakhtar are an excellent team who have demonstrated their great capabilities in the Champions League against such top clubs as Real Madrid and Inter. Probably, it will be positive for us that the Miners will arrive for the first game in Israel after a two-month break without having any competitive games. But, I want to repeat, they are a good and experienced team staffed with technical players. It will be important for us to score at home, so we’ve got to be aggressive offensively, and only after that we should properly prepare for the return leg. It will be a very good experience for us and we will do our best to worthily represent Maccabi in this clash.”
