Shakhtar played Chornomorets away in the UPL round 5 match

The Miners arrived in Odesa right between the two European games, therefore Roberto De Zerbi gave some rest to a few players: as many as nine Ukrainian players appeared in the starting line-up at once, including both the experienced Pyatov, Kyvtsov, Stepanenko, Marlos, and young Sudakov, Mudryk, Sikan. We would like to make a special mention of the debut appearance of the club Academy graduate Yukhym Konoplia.

Numerical and scoring advantage

No sooner had the teams entered the game properly than the Odesa side made things much more difficult for themselves: in the 13th minute Bohdan Beloshevskyi fouled on Alan Patrick, with the referee initially showing a yellow card, but after watching VAR he changed his mind and sent off a Chornomorets defender. The visitors expectedly took possession of the ball and settled in the opposing half of the field in search of chances: attempts by Marlos and Patrick were blocked by defenders, Sikan missed the target following Mudryk's cross. Meanwhile, the Odesa outfit nearly converted their chance - after a free-kick and deflection off the wall, Avagimyan’s effort hit the post. The Orange-and-Blacks correctly interpreted the alarming situation and opened the scoring a couple of minutes later: Mudryk sent a great pass to Heorhii Sudakov in the penalty area, with the latter sending his attempt right inside the far corner, making it 0-1. The Donetsk team continued charging forward, and this time Kucheruk rescued his side from the attempts of Patrick and Sikan, and Matviienko scored a goal following a corner-kick, but the goal was disallowed due to handball after the referee had checked VAR. Just a few moments later, the video assistant unruled the goal scored by Putria due to the latter’s offside position. And in the last stoppage time minute, the Miners netted another goal in line with the rules: Konoplia provided an assist to Alan Patrick in the debut appearance, with the latter beating the keeper from about an 11-metre range to make it 0-2.

Solomon's long-awaited goal

Early in the second half, Shakhtar again began creating chances near the Odesa outfit’s goal. Sikan narrowly missed the crosspiece – the ball went high, Patrick brought Ismaily through on target with a clinical pass only to see the latter fail to beat the keeper, while Mudryk dribbled the ball across Shakhtar’s half only to see his effort go outside the far post. Midway through the second half, De Zerbi brought in the fresh Vitao, Korniienko, Marcos Antonio and Solomon into battle, also fielding Dentinho later. As usual, Manor actively entered the game and immediately checked Kucheruk’s reflexes with a long-range attempt. The Sailors snapped back through Vanat’s attempt who was close to sending home Isayenko’s delivery. But in general, Pyatov’s goal was not threatened that much. In the dying minutes, Dentinho was close to scoring - the goalkeeper twice rescued the hosts from the Brazilian's shots. And Manor Solomon sealed the win – the Israeli hit the back of the net through Mudryk’s assist!

3-0 - Shakhtar defeated Chornomorets and started preparing for this summer’s major game. On August 25 in Kharkiv, the Miners are facing a return leg of the Champions League play-off round tie against Monaco. The meeting at the OSC Metalist kicks off at 22:00.
