FC Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov received a special award from the UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin
The meeting took place on Wednesday 1 December at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon. The UEFA chief presented Rinat Akhmetov the UEFA Football Leadership Award to mark Shakhtar's achievements during 25 years of his presidency and in the year of the club's 85th anniversary.
Aleksander Čeferin, UEFA president:
“The list of Shakhtar Donetsk FC's trophies that were won under your presidency is impressive. With 13 Ukrainian championships and 11 national cups won in this millennium, the club became an exemplary success story in the post-Soviet era. And not only on the national level – by winning the last UEFA Cup Final, back in 2009, an important landmark is left on the international stage as well.
But all these trophies tell only one part of the story. After being a regular member of the UEFA Champions League for more than two decades, the black-and-orange colors and recognizable style of play of your team are now recognized by the worldwide football auditorium as an integral part of the folklore of the world's greatest football competition. None of this would be possible without such a great passion and your wise leadership."
After the award presentation, they organised an official lunch involving Aleksander Čeferin, Rinat Akhmetov, Sergei Palkin, Darijo Srna and Zvonimir Boban at the UEFA HQ to mark the important milestone.
