Immediately after the match, Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin shared his take on the 4-0 win over Desna and the mood before the return leg vs Roma in his interview to Shakhtar News
- How much did the team need this victory psychologically?
- For us, every victory is important, especially this one as it was a rather important match. Hopefully, our unlucky streak is over now. I liked the game. We played well until the first goal, then we relaxed a bit, and then goals just rained down - we showed some beautiful attacking football. Taking into account our previous results which didn’t please us, and our play sometimes did not please us, today, hopefully, was a key match that would completely change our thinking, the thinking of our players, and will psych us up for the next match. The game against Roma will be really difficult, but in football anything is possible. If we manage to score two early goals, then, I think, everything will be much easier. We hope for a positive result.
- Desna are a fairly strong team sitting in the fourth spot in the table – in the first part of the league campaign, for the first time in their history they managed to nick points off Shakhtar. What can you say about the opponents?
- Desna are really strong opponents. If, God forbid, we had lost, the title race would have practically ended for us. Everyone understood that: the footballers, the coaching staff, the management. That’s why the match was key for us.
- Do you think you have any chance of making it further in the Europa League after losing 0-3 to Roma in the first leg?
- As I said, we always have some chances. The matter is that we just need to really psych up for this game. Even more so as at the moment we are on the rise mentally. Therefore, I think that the main thing is to tune in well, to be mentally relaxed on the one hand, and focused on the other hand. If these two factors are present ... Moreover, we play at home - there will be fans present. I hope the twelfth man will help us.
