In the third qualifier for the 2022 World Cup, Ukraine national team hosted Kazakhstan in Kyiv

Shakhtar goalkeeper Anatolii Trubin made his first appearance for the national team. Shakhtar defenders Sergii Kryvtsov, Mykola Matviienko and striker Junior Moraes also appeared in the starting XI.

Multiple attempts

In the first half, Moraes had two chances: Junior first reached the shooting range after receiving a splitting pass from Zinchenko only to send the ball wide, and a bit later his volley missed the target after Malynovskyi's delivery. Nevertheless, Yaremchuk converted his chance in the course of a blistering attack in the 20th minute, making it 1-0. Towards 30 minutes, this trio nearly produced another scoring move, but Roman lacked accuracy to grab a brace after receiving a cross from the captain. Next, Malyi got in front of the near corner to prevent the active Moraes from getting on the scoresheet. Kryvtsov attempted to head home the deflected free-kick effort by Malynovskyi - just wide. The set of possibilities was complemented by a spectacular attack that Zinchenko tried to complete with a far-corner effort only to see the ball whizz just inches off the post.

Third draw

After the break, the hosts continued putting pressure on the opposing goal, but instead of netting the second one, they just gave one away: Muzhikov beautifully finished off a positional attack of the Kazakhstan national team with his bent shot into the far corner, making it 1-1. Andriy Shevchenko made a double substitution in the 67th minute, fielding Marlos and Zubkov instead of Sydorchuk and Moraes. Oleksandr immediately had a great chance, but his attempt just hit Pokatilov’s leg. Later, Marlos struck twice, just hitting the defender and into the hands of the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper also coped with the attempt of another debutant Artem Dovbyk.

As a result, the Ukraine national team started the qualifying round with three draws (vs France, Finland and Kazakhstan) with the same score of 1-1. The players are returning to their clubs to prepare for the resumption of their domestic league campaigns.
