Luis Castro leaves Shakhtar after two years of working with the team

Opera Hotel hosted a meeting between Sergei Palkin and Luis Castro at which the Shakhtar CEO thanked the head coach for working with the team and handed him a personalized shirt bearing the number 84 (the number of the Miners’ competitive games under Luis Castro) and a memorable souvenir from the club.

51 wins, league title and UEL semis

Luis Castro took charge of Shakhtar on 12 June 2019 after signing a two-year deal. He is the 33rd coach in the club history. For Castro it was the first experience of working outside Portugal. In the very first season, he won the Ukrainian League title with the Miners. This result went down in history seeing the champions’ record lead over the UPL runners-up (23 points). Also that season, Shakhtar went a long way in European competitions and reached the Europa League semi-finals.

In the 2020/21 season, Shakhtar finished third in their Champions League group featuring Real Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach and Inter Milan after claiming two wins over the Spanish club and drawing with the Italians twice. This enabled the side to continue their European campaign in the Europa League seeing the Miners make it past Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Round of 16 and get defeated by Roma in the following round.

In 84 games with Luis Castro at the helm, Shakhtar had 51 wins and 16 draws. The team scored 168 goals (two per game).

FC Shakhtar would like to thank Luis Castro and his coaching staff for working with the team. We wish Luis every success in his future career, along with new achievements and victories!
