Head of the Youth Football Centre Edgar Cardoso has extended his contract with Shakhtar

The new agreement between the Portuguese specialist and the club is effective for two years until December 31st, 2023.

Sergei Palkin, FC Shakhtar CEO:

“Edgar corresponds to the philosophy of development of our Academy, to the vision and the principles it should develop in line with. For us, it’s not the Academy titles that are important, but the players in the first team, the focus on individuals and not on the overall team result. The focus on the players’ personal development is something that Edgar is well versed in and delivers quite serious results. The coaching staff of the first team are very well aware of how the Academy is developing and what kind of guys it gives us. If you look at the current style of Shakhtar U19 of graduation age, it fully corresponds to the game showcased by the first team. Hence the synergy, the relationship between the first team and the Academy, and this is a big step towards success. The challenges facing Edgar? So that every year the first team gets as many players as possible. If it’s one footballer, it will be very, very good. In today's realities and given the requirements to a graduate of the Academy, he needs to carry out a tremendous amount of work and make every effort to get into the first team. The whole club pays great attention to this – it’s very important for us that the guys from the Academy play in the first team.”

Edgar Cardoso, Head of the Youth Football Centre:

“I'm happy. This is a recognition of the work that we have done since last season – of course, not only me, but all the people who work with me at the Academy. We are responsible for doing more and better, and our main goal is to have more Academy players joining the first team. We have some great and promising guys. Our job is to work to the maximum to bring the players to the first team in the best form possible, and then it’s up to the head coach to decide. Now there is a good connection between the first team and the Academy - I suppose this is a great achievement. Daily, De Zerbi invites the Academy players to train with the first team. This is the key for the guys, allowing them to grow and develop, and also an indicator that allows young footballers to feel how much attention the first team pay to the Academy matters. I believe that the teams of Shakhtar and Ukraine have good prospects thanks to the development of young players.”
