On October 9, the V. Bannikov Training Centre in Kyiv hosted a children's football tournament named after Serhiy Atelkin
The competition involved 60 children aged 7 and 8 training at the Shakhtar Football School in Kyiv, Brovary and Vinnytsia.
The tournament was held in two stages. At stage one, the participants tried their hand at entertaining football competitions, while the second stage included games across two groups of six teams that were named after the former Shakhtar footballers who played together with Serhiy Atelkin (Bakharev, Belik, Virt, Vorobei, Zubov, Kovalyov, Leonov, Matveev, Orbu, Popov, Starostyak, Shutkov).
“In my opinion, Serhiy is one of the best players who etched his name in the club history,” says the Shakhtar goalkeeper of the 1990s-2000s Dmytro Shutkov. “We have known each other since the age of 16. The first and main thing I can say about him is that he is a real fighter. I want to mention his personal qualities: straightforward, always called a spade a spade, he never whispered behind someone else’s back. Atelkin is the man with a miner's character: he was born in a mining town, his family was related to coal mining, he also studied at a mining technical school. Everything in his life was connected with this profession and with the Shakhtar team. It's nice that this kind of tournament is held in memory of Serhiy.”
The third prize in the Atelkin tournament was won by the Starostyak team, the second one went to the Kovalyov side, and the winners are the Vorobei team. All participants received gifts. Children were awarded by Serhiy Atelkin's wife Anastasiia, his son Kyrylo who currently plays for the Academy’s U15 team, along with the Shakhtar legends Dmytro Shutkov, Andrii Vorobei and Oleksii Belik.
“We are immensely grateful to FC Shakhtar because this is a very good commemoration of my husband. God grant that people remember him and more talents grow to turn into strikers, defenders ... So that there will be more people who love Shakhtar the way Serhiy did,” said Anastasiia Atelkina.
