Match build-up

In the UEFA Youth League group stage, Shakhtar had two matches: a 5-0 win over Sheriff U19 and a 0-1 defeat to Inter U19. They are sitting in the third spot in Group D with three points.
The game against Real Madrid will be key, as it will be decisive in terms of strategy and competition for the top two spots in the group. We lost in the match against Inter, and we mustn’t repeat this result to advance to the knockout phase
Illia Hulko, midfielder:

“The game against Real Madrid will be key, as it will be decisive in terms of strategy and competition for the top two spots in the group. We lost in the match against Inter, and we mustn’t repeat this result to advance to the knockout phase. Real Madrid are a great team showcasing strong football, but we also have some excellent qualities, the main thing is to show them. If we manage to impose our play onto the opponents, everything will be all right.”

Opponents

Real Madrid play in the UEFA Youth League regularly (the team did not take part in the tournament only once). The 2019/20 season was the most successful as the Spaniards won by beating Benfica in the final. This season, Hernan Perez's lads drew with Inter away, having lost their success in stoppage time, followed by their major victory of 4-1 over Sheriff U19. The top scorer is eighteen-year-old Bruno Iglesias (two goals). Interestingly, the team’s backbone is made up of the players of the Castilla reserve team playing in the third division in Spain.

Madrid skilfully use ball control, with the help of which they organize quick transitions from defence to attack. Real Madrid’s fullbacks are dangerous in positional attacks, it is due to these players that the team often use open spaces in the opponents’ half.

Head-to-head record

In the 2015/16 season, the rivals met twice in the UEFA Youth League group stage. The Spaniards won both matches.
