Shakhtar thrashed Sheriff in the UEFA Youth League round 1
Oskar Ratulutra fielded the same 11 players vs Sheriff as in the previous league match vs Dnipro-1. Tvardovskyi stood between the sticks; Kapinus, Farina, Kozik and Buleza played as defenders; Losenko, Hluschenko, Hulko, Siheev and Veklenko appeared in midfield, with Honcharuk operating as the lone striker.
Playing advantage
The teams got off to a cautious start, without creating lots of early chances. But already in the 10th minute, the Miners carried out their first attack: Buleza brought Siheev on target with a splitting pass, but a Sheriff defender blocked Kyrylo’s attempt. A couple of minutes later, Veklenko bent it towards the far corner of the net only to see Dumenco rescue the hosts. Sheriff played defensively with only two free-kicks in the opposing half which posed no no threat to Tvardovskyi's goal. Midway through the first half, Shakhtar had a clear-cut chance in the 32nd minute when Honcharuk sent in a left cross and Siheev failed to hit the back of Sheriff's net from a point-blank range. And in the 37th minute, the Miners nevertheless opened the scoring after a lasting attack: Kapinus conveniently rolled the ball to Veklenko from the right flank, and Artem converted the chance.
Assists by Losenko
In the second half, Shakhtar continued to dominate and managed to score four goals. Early in the second half, Losenko found Buleza in the opposing penalty area with a splitting pass, but the host goalkeeper rushed out and intercepted the ball. And in the 56th minute, Losenko took part in the goal-scoring attack by getting one on one with the goalkeeper, Ivan waited for Siheev to link up and passed the ball, with the attacking midfielder sending the ball into the unguarded net, making it 0-2. A few minutes later, Losenko fed Honcharuk, with Danyil skillfully outplaying two Sheriff defenders and hammering it right inside the far post. Honcharuk immediately earned a penalty by his active pressing in the hosts’ box, with Hluschenko confidently converting the spot-kick. At the end of the match, the Miners could have scored another one after a counterattack and Siheev's effort, but Dumenco leaped to turn the ball for a corner at the last moment. Shakhtar sealed the win in stoppage time: Hulko was brought down by a Sheriff defender in the hosts’ penalty area, while Pohorilyi successfully sent it past the goalkeeper from the spot to set the 0-5 scoreline.
Shakhtar began their UEFA Youth League group stage campaign with an away victory over Sheriff. In the next round of the European competiton, the young Miners will host their Inter Milan counterparts on September 28. On September 18, in the domestic league, Shakhtar U19 will host their Mariupol peers.
