Shakhtar and Dynamo will lock horns in the Ukrainian Super Cup clash in Kyiv this Wednesday

September 22, Kyiv, NSC Olimpiyskiy, 21:00

Match build-up

The domestic Super Cup tie is always a special game for both participating sides because the trophy’s future is decided in a single match. Normally, it is held at the start of the season, but this time they will conduct it after the league round 8. The reporters asked Roberto De Zerbi about this on Tuesday, and the Shakhtar head coach replied that it is not the team who decide on the date, while the team’s task is just to be ready and play on the appointed date.

In September, the Miners had three matches with different outcomes. They suffered a defeat at the start of the Champions League campaign, while in the Ukrainian league they claimed the maximum 6 points vs Dnipro-1 and Mariupol. Now the Orange-and-Blacks have the opportunity to build up their confidence and raise the first trophy this season. By the way, Roberto De Zerbi currently boasts 9 victories at the helm of Shakhtar.

There are 21 players on the preliminary squad list for the match against Dynamo:

goalkeepers: Shevchenko, Puzankov, Pyatov;
defenders: Dodo, Vitao, Kryvtsov, Marlon, Matviienko, Konoplia, Ismaily, Korniienko;
midfielders: Stepanenko, Maycon, Marcos Antonio, Marlos, Tete, Solomon, Alan Patrick, Pedrinho;
forwards: Traore, Sikan.

Opponents

For attacking, the Dynamo coach currently uses either Illia Shkurin who joined the team in the summer, or the proven versatile striker Denys Harmash. Vitalii Buyalskyi’s role just behind the striker is really important, with Viktor Tsyhankov (right) and Carlos De Pena (left) threatening from the flanks. It is worth noting that Mykola Shaparenko, despite his offensive focus, helps the team a lot without the ball - he is the UPL leader for the number of defensive challenges. As for the four defenders, Illia Zabarnyi is unconditionally the main centre-back, with Lucescu rotating Syrota and Shabanov as the second central defender, on the left, Mykolenko is second to none at left-back, with Kedziora being deployed most often at right-back.

Head-to-head record

Previously, Shakhtar and Dynamo competed for the Super Cup on 13 occasions. In normal time, the Miners claimed three win with the same 2-0 score (in 2014, 2015 and 2017). And before that, the Donetsk side, after tying 1-1, had beaten the Kyiv side twice in a penalty shootout (2005, 2008). For the last three years, Dynamo have won the trophy (2018, 2019, 2020).
