Shakhtar played a charity match against Olympiacos in Athens as part of the Shakhtar Global Tour for Peace
All proceeds from the sale of match tickets and advertising will be donated to the defenders of Ukraine, volunteer organizations, doctors, the funds will also be used to help the Ukrainian children affected by the war.
The footballers of both teams appeared for the match with the STOP WAR lettering on their shirts, while the Shakhtar players were holding the flags of Ukraine, with their jerseys also bearing the names of the Ukrainian hero cities affected by the hostilities instead of the shirt names. The game began with a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the war in Ukraine.
Shakhtar had a noticeable initiative from the start. In the early stages, Mykhailo Mudryk was active: one of his signature slaloming runs into the penalty area was interrupted by a sliding tackle of a defender of the Piraeus outfit. And in the very next episode, after a high-ball delivery by Bondarenko, the winger sent a dangerous cross right to the goal line, with none of his teammates being quick enough on the ball though. Yukhym Konoplia produced a remarkable long-range attempt right into the hands of the goalkeeper. Despite the Miners’ advantage, the hosts managed to score one: on 22 minutes, Tiquinho Soares got his bearings in the penalty area and headed home the ball that had taken deflection off the crossbar. Petro Stasiuk immediately replaced the injured Konoplia. Just after a few minutes, the former produced a strong effort from outside the penalty area only to see the ball go wide. Dmytro Myshnyov was close to equalising but for the keeper who turned his attempt for a corner. Mudryk threatened the goal on a few more occasions, but failed to score.
The second half began with a dangerous effort by the same Mudryk from the penalty semi-circle – the goalkeeper again rescued the Greek outfit. The Miners’ skipper Taras Stepanenko also tested the goalkeeper’s reflexes with another long-ranger. In general, Shakhtar players, despite the long-lasting absence of match practice and training, displayed a great pace and playing dynamics. Midway through the second half, the Olympiacos footballers made a few attempts at the Donetsk side’s goal, but Oleksii Shevchenko who came on for Anatolii Trubin between the sticks, operated safely. The play was boosted by the Academy boys who appeared as substitutes: Denys Shostak, Dmytro Kapinus, and Oleksandr Drambaev. Dangerous crosses of the latter were headed goalwards by Mudryk, but at first he did not reach for the ball, and then just sent it wide. In the dying stages, Cisse’s header was once again stopped by Shevchenko. Thus, the first half score remained unchanged – 1-0 in favour of the champions of Greece. The match ended with the crowd in the stands chanting “Ukraine! Ukraine!”.
On April 14, the Miners will play a charity match against Lechia Gdansk as part of the Shakhtar Global Tour for Peace.
