Shakhtar hosted Metalist 1925 in the Ukrainian league round 1 game in Kyiv

All participants came on to play the first match of the new season with Ukrainian flags on the occasion of the Day of the National Flag celebrated on August 23. Also a ceremonial flag raising was performed at the NSC Olimpiyskiy to the strains of the National Anthem, whereafter teams took a group photo with “We are of one courage” banner. “Donetsk. Ukraine will win” inscription appeared on the training jerseys of the Miners. UNITED24 platform logo was placed in the central stand.

Prior to the match start, players paid tribute to the war victims in Ukraine with a moment of silence. First symbolic kick was performed by Shakhtar fan, serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Starting XI of the Orange-and-Blacks: Trubin had the goalkeeper position; Matviienko and Kryvtsov played in central defence; newcomers Taylor and Mykhailichenko played on flanks in defence; midfield was taken by Stepanenko, Djurasek and Sudakov; Petriak and Mudryk played as wingers; Sikan was in central forward position.

Game Advantage

The Miners took the initiative from the opening minutes and began to seek ways to the rival goal: Mudryk shot from an acute angle near the post and Sudakov’s attempt from the perimeter was caught by the goalkeeper. Kharkiv players had chances to score in the opening stages, but Trubin headed Rusyn’s shot from several meters. And then the host created a chance immediately: the goalkeeper parried Mudryk’s attempt and saved Petriak's follow-up. Sudakov had the opportunity to score in the middle of the half-time after a good combination, but he was lack of space to play over Mozil. Mudryk shot above the crossbar from a perspective free kick and Kryvtsov chipped the ball after a cross from the set piece, but missed the target. Shakhtar continued to press and the number of goal attempts increased to 13 by the end of the first half, but there were no scoring before the break.

Goalless Draw

The second half was also started with Shakhtar’s attacks: Mudryk’s piercing pass found Sudakov in the penalty box, but Heorhii made a powerful shot putting the ball into the net from outside almost from a zero angle. Substitute Artem Bondarenko’s attempt did not reach the goal as well: the ball bounced to a corner kick. Mudryk's signature short cut to the penalty area ended with falling, but the referee did not spotted a foul. Stepanenko performed a long-range attempt with his right foot, but Kharkiv defender reacted in time. Valeriy Kryventsov's charges responded with scoring chances after the set pieces: Kurylo shot dangerously both times, near the post and several centimeters about the crossbar. Mudryk shot two free kicks above the target. Oleg Ocheretko, who appeared on the field earlier, had the last chance, but his headed attempt almost from the box line ended close up to the crossbar. 0-0 – Shakhtar and Metalist 1925 played draw.
