In an interview with shakhtar.com, Shakhtar midfielder Heorhii Sudakov spoke about his family, vacationing, training, De Zerbi's exactingness and the desire to win the league title
- Heorhii, how did this year begin for you? Where did you saw it in?
- I saw in the New Year with my family at home, in Kyiv.
- The head coach wished you to recover well and gain strength. You flew on holiday to the Dominican Republic. It that just the right thing to recharge your batteries?
- I think so. We’ve been away from matches and training sessions for a while to gain strength. We had enough time to miss football. I think a month of vacation is quite enough. We are in Ukraine now.
- What do you remember best in the Dominican Republic?
- Basically, I liked everything: the ocean, great atmosphere, vacationing with my family. We spent more time on the sand, sometimes playing volleyball or tennis.
- Let's move on to a more personal topic. You made a proposal to your girlfriend, you and Lisa are expecting a baby. How does all this change you? How much responsibility does it add?
- I'm ready for that. We’ve been together for three years now. Indeed, I’ve got more responsibility, I am becoming more of a family man and getting more serious.
- Did you adjust your vacation plans in any way to travel less in connection with Liza's delicate condition?
- Of course we did. We flew to the Dominican Republic, and virtually didn’t go anywhere else. Unnecessary transfers or flights are not acceptable for us.
- Do you miss the team and football?
- Yes, I already want to resume the training process and the games, to meet with all the guys and talk to them.
- Did you see any of your teammates while on vacation?
- We flew to the Dominican Republic with Artem Bondarenko, we stayed in the same hotel. And in Kyiv I saw Anatolii Trubin, we played football together.
- Your Instagram profile is sudakov_11. Maybe you will change your player number in 2022? It’s vacant just now.
- This is because I had number 11 when playing as a kid. But if no one on the team is against it, I wouldn’t mind changing it.
- Do you understand each other with Roberto De Zerbi? What do you make of Shakhtar’s first part of the season and what is the most important thing for you and the team?
- Most importantly, after the first round we are topping the league table with a two-point lead. I think the team have progressed a lot in terms of our character and inner atmosphere. As well as in every component of play, I guess. As for me, they give me more time on the field now and I also feel that I have improved my performance in many respects. All this is thanks to Mister.
- Is it the coaches who constantly give you some advice, direct you and don’t leave you one on one with certain issues?
- They always give us some tips. They just come up and ask us, helping us when we need it. In the training process, you can always find something out, stay after the session, and they will work with you more.
- What are the main requirements to your role?
- To score goals and provide assists, to offer myself between the lines, to turn around and add threat to our play.
- Does De Zerbi approach you as a beginner footballer, or does he have the same requirements to everyone?
- Of course the second. It doesn't matter how old you are, he demands the maximum of everyone. No matter whether it’s Pyatov or Sudakov, the same requirements are set for everyone.
- What are your plans and personal goals for the approaching training camp? What would you like to improve in your play asap?
- First of all, I want to become a regular, cement my place in the team and prove to the coach that I am ready. Plus to improve my finishing: to play more forward, add danger to our performance, score goals and provide assists.
- Does the league title’s future depend just on you?
- I believe it all depends on us. This year, we must become champions.
