On July 22, Shakhtar played a test match against Fortuna Sittard

The game against the representatives of the Dutch Eredivisie has been the Miners’ first during the summer break and the debut one with Igor Jovicevic at the helm. In the Miners’ starting lineup, Anatolii Trubin took the place in goal, Valerii Bondar and Danylo Udod appeared at centre-back, with Yukhym Konoplia and Viktor Korniienko operating as fullbacks. In the centre of the field, next to the captain Taras Stepanenko, Dmytro Kryskiv and Croatian newcomer Neven Djurasek appeared, with wingers roles going to Vladyslav Vakula (right) and Andriy Totovytskyi (left), and with Danylo Sikan operating as a central striker.

Shakhtar players took the field carrying flags of Ukraine to the sound of the national anthem. Before the kick-off whistle, the teams kept a minute’s silence paying tribute to all the Ukrainians who had been killed as a result of the war unleashed by Russia.

First-half comeback

The Dutch who had managed to gain a good playing shape, started the game actively as was expected, and scored two early goals. Initially, in the 11th minute Noslin flicked home his teammate’s cross, and in the 14th minute Seuntjens hit the near top corner with a free kick and doubled the hosts’ lead. Midway through the first half, the Miners made the play even, began to control the ball more, and this brought results. First, Djurasek hit the crossbar from afar, and in the 35th minute Vakula fought for the ball down the flank and passed it to the goal line, from where Danylo Sikan scored the team’s first goal this summer, making it 2-1. Shakhtar players continued charging forward and equalized a minute away from half-time: Korniienko attempted a free-kick, the goalkeeper made a save just in front of him, and Taras Stepanenko was the first on the rebound, making it 2-2.

Productive game

During the break, Igor Jovicevic fully changed the squad: Andriy Pyatov, Ihor Kiryukhantsev, Eduard Kozik, Roman Savchenko, Dmytro Topalov, Maksym Chekh, Heorhii Sudakov, Mykhailo Mudryk, Oleh Ocheretko, Oleksii Kashchuk and Andriy Kulakov entered the field. The Miners played more confidently with the ball and spent most of their time in the opposing half of the field, however, their fluid performance lacked threatening passes in the final third. But systematic pressure led to the third goal scored: in the 65th minute, Korniienko threw the ball in to Oleh Ocheretko who beat three opponents at the corner of the penalty area and curled a left-footer just inside the far post, making it 2-3. However, the Sittard side reacted instantly: at first they created a couple of dangerous chances, and in the 69th minute Noslin accurately hit the near corner from about 13 metres to level the scores. In the remaining time, the Orange-and-Blacks looked more active and were closer to victory: a pacey Mudryk broke into the penalty area, but failed to hit the hosts' goal, while the keeper saved Kashchuk’s attempt. 3-3 – Shakhtar opened the training camp fixtures with a draw against Fortuna.

On July 26, Igor Jovicevic’s men will play a Shakhtar Global Tour for Peace match vs Ajax in Amsterdam. The meeting kicks off at 20:00 Kyiv time at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
