Ukraine U19 beat the Netherlands U19 in the final match of the 2022 UEFA European U19 Championship elite round
Before the last round, all four teams in the group retained a chance of reaching the Euro 2022 finals, therefore each team played just to win. The Blue-and-Yellows’ starting XI included four Shakhtar footballers: defenders Eduard Kozik, Andrii Buleza, Maryan Farina and midfielder Ivan Losenko.
Early in the meeting, the actual hosts were more active (the match was taking place in Rotterdam), and in the 15th minute the Dutch striker Poku opened the scoring. After that, the Ukrainians managed to level the play and create a couple of dangerous chances, but the main events took place after the break.
The turning point happened early in the second half when the opposing goalkeeper Rufs was sent off for a foul on Voloshyn. Volodymyr Yezerskyi's men quickly used their numerical advantage and equalized in the 55th minute: following a corner-kick, Shakhtar’s Eduard Kozik made it 1-1. The Ukrainians spent the whole half attacking and, as a result, made 17 attempts on target (versus the Netherlands’ 7 efforts), but managed to score the decider only in the 90th minute – the goalscorer is Kostiantyn Popov. 2-1 – the Blue-Yellows secured a comeback victory over the Netherlands U19 side.
According to the results of the elite round, the Ukraine U19 team and the Serbia U19 outfit have the same figures (7 points each and the goal difference of 6-4), however, the Serbs have qualified for Euro 2022 from the top spot due to a smaller number of disciplinary points (10 yellow cards against the Ukrainians’ 13 cards).
