In the 2023 UEFA Euro qualification MD9 game, Ukraine U21 met with France U21
Nominally, the Ukrainians hosted the game against the group leaders in Istanbul because of the war unleashed in our country by Russia. The players fielded by the Blue-Yellows’ head coach Ruslan Rotan in the starting XI included three representatives of Shakhtar: goalkeeper Anatolii Trubin, midfielders Artem Bondarenko and Heorhii Sudakov.
Events developed rapidly, and already in the 3rd minute the French opened the scoring thanks to a precision shot by Abline. But the hosts quickly bounced back: after a spectacular volley pass and an assist by Sudakov, Vladyslav Vanat clinically hit a top corner to make it 1-1. However, the opponents quickly took the lead again (Thuram-Ulie scored one), and midway through the first half he extended the lead (Gouiri netted one). However, a minute away from half-time and after Sych's cross, the French captain Badiashile cut the ball into his own net, making it 2-3. And early in the second half, the Ukrainians secured a full comeback: the counterattack ended with a pass by Vivcharenko and a scoring shot by the Miner Artem Bondarenko. Despite the attacking efforts of both sides, the score remained unchanged until the very end of the meeting. 3-3 - a bright draw between Ukraine U21 and France U21.
The French topped their group with 26 points and became participants in the European Championship. The Ukrainians advanced from the second spot to the qualifying campaign playoffs where they will be able to compete for the 2023 UEFA U21 Euro berth.
In the group stage, the Blue-Yellows have one more match to play. On June 12, they will play Armenia U21 away.
