Shakhtar midfielder Artem Bondarenko spoke about life during wartime and faith in the Ukrainian people’s victory
- Artem, Ukraine has been resisting Russia’s military aggression for three weeks now. What’s your take on all the things happening?
- It’s very difficult to perceive such events, to realize that this is happening in our homeland, in our country. It’s horrible that innocent people, civilians and children are killed daily, cities are destroyed... All this is like some kind of a terrible dream that has affected us.
- How has life changed for you and your family over this time? Do you make some time to talk to your teammates?
- Of course, life has changed completely: it passes amid permanent anxiety now. We’ve got some absolutely different priorities and desires now. Personally, I currently have just one dream – I want this whole nightmare to be over as soon as possible. I exchange phone calls and messages with the guys. We try to learn about everyone’s circumstances. Such moments generally help us to appreciate our friendship and communication even more.
- How can famous people, athletes currently help the country and the Ukrainian people in this struggle?
- Everyone helps with the things they can help with: someone provides some humanitarian aid, someone else helps financially. I am really delighted that at this moment our country has united and everyone is obsessed with a single goal of winning this war. I want to say a huge thank you to our soldiers, territorial defence guys, volunteers – to all the people who bring Ukraine closer to victory. We will definitely advocate the truth!
