Shakhtar entertained Real Madrid in Warsaw in the UCL group stage MD4 game

All tickets for the game were sold out and the meet took place in front of the full stands of the Stadion Wojska Polskiego (attendance: 29,030). There was a tifo before the start of the match: stands were painted in the colours of Ukrainian and Polish flags symbolizing friendship and solidarity of two peoples.

Igor Jovicevic made only one improvement in the squad comparing with the previous match in Madrid: Lassina Traore appeared in the starting lineup in the central forward position and Oleksandr Zubkov switched to the right wing.

Equal half

The Miners acted bravely from the first minutes trying not to be inferior to the opponent in control over the ball. There was an exchange with several inaccurate long-rangers between Sudakov and Rüdiger in the opening, but then Trubin entered the game parrying away Benzema’s dangerous attempt into the near corner. In the middle of the half time, Zubkov tested his strength from a distance, but defender blocked it. Trubin interrupted Benzema’s threatening cross and then made a save turning Valverde’s powerful shot for a corner.

Zubkov’s factor and last second drama

The teams showed a tornadic second half after a relatively quiet first half. Everything started from Shakhtar’s first goal already in the 46th minute: Mudryk fed Mykhailichenko on the left wing, Bohdan made a delivery into the penalty area and Oleksandr Zubkov headed it accurately into the far corner making it 1-0. Carlo Ancelotti strengthened the attack by fielding Modric and Vinicius at once in response to the conceded goal. Real Madrid rushed to come back, but the Pitmen’s defence acted perfectly: Konoplia and Mykhailichenko blocked the flank crosses, Bondar and Matviienko dealt with all balls in the centre of the penalty box and Madrid players’ long-rangers missed the target. The Orange-and-Blacks themselves could have increased the score in counter-attacks. Zubkov send Traore one-on-one, the Burkinian outplayed the keeper, but hit the crossbar from an acute angle. It was Zubkov who tested Lunin with diagonal shot – the goalkeeper made a challenging save turning the ball for a corner. Mudryk moved from the flank and shot near the post. The Spaniards responded with a series of own attacks: Bondar got ahead of Benzema for a moment and cleared the ball for a corner; and Kroos shot a little bit inaccurately from outside the penalty area. Igor Jovicevic refreshed the team with substitutions fielding Sikan, Djurasek, Taylor and Petriak. The Galacticos created their best chance already at the end of the game: Vinicius headed the ball over the crossbar from the box line and Rüdiger’s header missed the left corner. Dramatic outcome happened in the last added minute: Kroos made a delivery into the penalty area and Rüdiger, in hard collision with Trubin, headed the ball bouncing from the post into the back of the net.

1-1 – Shakhtar finish the match with the current UCL winners Real Madrid in draw. Now the Miners have 5 points and are one point behind RB Leipzig being on the second spot. Shakhtar will face Celtic in the next round.

And next Sunday, October 16, Igor Jovicevic’s men will host Dynamo Kyiv in the UPL match.
