Ukraine U21 demolished Slovakia in the play-off second leg and advance to the U21 Euro 2023 for the third time in history
The youth team lost to Slovakia 2-3 in the play-off first leg (Viunnyk and Kryskiv scored). Ruslan Rotan changed two players in the starting eleven after that match: the Shakhtar Academy graduate Drambaiev and Shakhtar player Sikan fielded instead of Vivcharenko and Vanat.
No goals
Ukraine took the territorial advantage at the beginning of the match, but the opponent had the first dangerous chance after a counter-attack (Trubin dealt with Suslov’s attempt). In the 24th minute, the Ukrainians had the opportunity to score the first goal, but Sych failed in a one-on-one situation. The Slovaks responded with Strelec’s shot, but Trubin saved. Drambaiev performed an excellent delivery from the wing at the end of the half, but Sikan did not manage to join the attack at near post. Then Bondarenko finished a top-level counter attack (goalkeeper).
Fantastic Sikan
During the break, Ukraine coaching staff made 2 substitutions: Nazarenko and Brazhko appeared instead of Viunnyk and Mykhailenko. And the Ukrainians scored two quick goals already in the opening minutes of the first half, Danylo Sikan made a double: at first, the forward hit the unprotected goal from Sych’s pass, and then he successfully finished after a follow-up. Being behind, the hosts went forward, but they couldn’t close the gap. In the 66th minute, Sikan scored for the third time when Kryskiv pressed the opponent, developed a counter-attack and brought Danylo through. Slovakia failed to score until the match end and Rotan’s men skilfully carried out counter-attacks.
Ukraine defeat Slovakia on aggregate thanks to Danylo Sikan’s hat-trick with the overall scoring of 5-3 and advance to Euro 2023.
