Shakhtar played vs RB Leipzig away on the UCL group stage MD1
The Miners opened new European season with match against one of the strongest teams of the German Bundesliga. The Pitmen entered the Red Bull Arena field wearing new away kits from Puma.
Tournament debutant Igor Jovicevic made some unexpected staff decisions. Anatolii Trubin took the goalkeeper position, as expected; Mykola Matviienko and Valerii Bondar were in central defence; Lucas Taylor took the right flank, Yukhym Konoplia played on the left. Taras Stepanenko, Artem Bondarenko and Heorhii Sudakov performed their duties in the field centre; Mykhailo Mudryk played on the left attacking wing; herewith, the coach fielded Marian Shved on the right and Oleksandr Zubkov was on the attacking end.
Shved’s first goal
The teams began the match in the high pace and the hosts looked more active during the opening minutes: Nkunku had the first chance, but his close-range shot was blocked by Trubin. The score was opened in the 16th minute by the Miners: goalkeeper Gulacsi went far beyond the penalty area, where he played too long with the ball and gave it to Marian Shved who rolled it into empty goal making it 0-1. After that, RB Leipzig started positional attack and spent most of the time on the visitors’ part of the field, but got only a possession percentage and nothing more. The Pitmen’s defence worked without mistakes and did not allow any chances in own penalty area maintaining minimum advantage until the break.
Sched, Mudryk, Traore, demolition job
During the opening minutes of the second half, the hosts had some chances (Nkunku’s attempt from free kick went above the crossbar and Silva almost turned it into the far post during delivery from the left) and scored an equalizer in the 57th minute: Simakan finished a sweeping attack by shooting into the top corner. However, the Miners sent the opponent down already in a minute: Mudryk run along the left wing and passed to the penalty box, Marian Shved shot and after a series of bounces the ball flew into the net – 1-2. Immediately after this, Igor Jovicevic substituted the main hero of the match. He fielded Ivan Petriak instead of Shved. Also Neven Djurasek and then Lassina Traore came on the field. Leipzig players increased the pressure, but they only managed to make some threatening crosses: Orban headed past the target, and Henrichs’s attempt went wide. In return, Shakhtar looked for their chances in counter-attacks and converted them to the full. In the 76th minute, Sudakov passed to Mykhailo Mudryk who made an excellent shot into the low corner past the goalkeeper making it 1-3. And in the 85th minute, Konoplia passed to Mudryk who delivered it to the goal-area line wherefrom Lassina Traore shot the target in one touch!
4-1 – Shakhtar open the Euroseason with away hammering of RB Leipzig. Igor Jovicevic made his debut in the Champions League with a win, Marian Shved made a brace, Mykhailo Mudryk scored one goal and proved two assists, Lassina Traore celebrated his return to the tournament after a one-year break with a goal.
Game against Chornomorets will wait Igor Jovicevic’s team in Lviv on September 10. The Miners will play against Scottish Celtic in the next round of the Champions League. This meet will take place in Warsaw at the Stadion Wojska Polskiego on September 14 starting at 19:45 Kyiv time. Match tickets are already on sale.
