Shakhtar U14 and U15 played in a tournament in Portugal

The Shakhtar Academy teams participated in a friendly tournament

On April 5–8, they held a friendly tournament in Portugal called Ibercup for the teams with players born in 2008 (U15) and 2009 (U14). The competition included a group stage, with participants getting to play-offs in case of positive result.

Shakhtar U14’s journey

Oleksandr Ovchynnikov’s and Oleksandr Voitovych’s teams faced Djurgardens (Sweden), Benfica and Barreirense (both Portugal) in the group stage. Shakhtar confidently advanced from the group, winning all 3 matches with a total goal difference of 7-0. The young Miners defeated Washington (USA) (4-0) in the round of 16, as well local Estoril (2-0) in the quarter-finals. The team conceded in the semi-finals for the first time, tying with Cova da Piedade (Portugal) in regular time, although Shakhtar were more precise in penalty shootout. The Orange-and-Blacks lost to PSV (Netherlands) (0-2) in the final and became silver medallists of the tournament. The best goalscorer is Roman Plaminskyi (6 goals).

Shakhtar U15’s journey

Volodymyr Samborskyi’s side did not pass the group stage as confidently as the younger team. Shakhtar gained 5 points in a quartet with Portuguese Sporting, Vitoria, and Real SC and advanced to the knockout stage from the second spot. The Miners tied with Vitoria and Real SC (1-1 in both matches) and beat Sporting (1-0). The Pitmen lost to Alverca in penalty shootout in the last 16 and left the tournament.
