Shakhtar played the away match against Kolos in the 5th round of the UPL
The starting line-up of the Orange-and-Blacks included Eduard Kozik, who played in the centre of defence next to Mykola Matviienko, and club’s newcomer Irakli Azarov made his debut on the left defensive wing. In honour of Miner's Day and Donetsk City Day, which are celebrated today, the name of the city of Donetsk with the flag of Ukraine appeared on the kits of the Miners under the club logo.
Main events before the break
The match started with the exchange of moments: Kozik beat the defender after a corner, and, when pursuing rebounds, he sent the ball over the crossbar, Matviienko blocked a dangerous shot by Bezborodko near the opposite goal. Soon, Mykola himself could have scored, but after a corner kick, his header missed the far corner. Shakhtar managed to open the scoring in the 25th minute after a cool combination: Zubkov passed the ball to Kryskiv on the right wing of the penalty area, the latter rolled the ball along the box line, and Yehor Nazaryna hit an unguarded net – 0-1. The teams took a break for some time, and it was disturbed by send-off of Giorgi Gocholeishvili in the 37th minute. But even in the minority, Patrick van Leeuwen’s lads managed to extend their lead before the break: in the added time, Kryskiv provided a second assist, making a neat pass from the right edge to the centre of the penalty area, where Oleksii Kashuk easily outplayed the goalkeeper – 0-2.
Playing under pressure
The second half started with dangerous attacks by the host team: Demchenko shot above the target from the middle of the penalty area, and Miakushko missed the far corner from the half-space. Dmytro Riznyk saved Shakhtar twice in a row: the goalkeeper saved two Salabai’s shots – a shot under the crossbar and a header in the direction of the far post. The coaching staff of Shakhtar reacted with a series of substitutions in the middle of the half, releasing fresh Konoplia, Rakitskyi, Sudakov, Viunnyk and Castillo. The visiting team were able to lead the game away from their own penalty area and calmly kept the opponents in the centre of the field, never giving Kovalivka team even the slightest opportunity for a final attack.
2-0 – Shakhtar defeat Kolos in the minority, and they are in the intermediate first place in the UPL standings with 11 points.
Patrick van Leeuwen’s team will play the next away match of the Ukrainian League on September 2 against Minaj. It will kick off at 13:00.
