Game4Ukraine charity game was organised by legendary Ukrainian player and Golden Ball winner Andrii Shevchenko and Ukraine national team leader and Arsenal London player Oleksandr Zinchenko. As the captains, they led the teams that came on wearing the colours of the flag of Ukraine – blue and yellow.
One of the participants of the match was Shakhtar legend and now the club’s Sports Director Darijo Srna. Also this evening, the world football stars and celebrities appeared on the field of Stamford Bridge stadium in London: Petr Cech, Dida, Gerard Pique, Fabio Cannavaro, Samuel Eto’o, Joe Cole, Clarence Seedorf, Gianfranco Zola, Luca Toni, Robert Pires and many others. Before the start of the match, the national anthems of Ukraine and the United Kingdom were played, and the address by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi was shown on the screens. During the meeting, the fans repeatedly gave standing ovations to Ukrainian people, meanwhile the stands chanted: “ZSU”.
As it happens with such matches, the game itself was exciting and had a lot of spectacular moments. In the first half, goalkeepers Cech and Lehmann made incredible saves, and West Ham legend Mark Noble scored the debut goal only in the 38th minute. But almost immediately, Seedorf equalized the score with a cool long-range shot into the top corner. Darijo Srna came on for Zinchenko's team in the second half and scored a goal in the 52nd minute: the Sports Director of Shakhtar shot past Dida from 12 meters. William Gallas capped the scoring in the 78th minute. 2-2 – a draw in the friendly match between the stars.
The goal of Game4Ukraine charity match was to raise funds for the reconstruction of the Mykhailo-Kotsiubynskyi Lyceum in Chernihiv region, which was destroyed by the Russian invaders in March 2022, and also to once again draw the attention of the football community to the war that Russia unleashed against Ukraine.
As a reminder, on August 6, Shakhtar will also play a charity match in support of the people of Ukraine. The Miners will face Tottenham in London. The match will kick off at 16:00 Kyiv time.
