Shakhtar faced Rennes away in the UEFA Europa League knockout round play-off second leg

The first game ended with a victory for the Miners (2-1). Head coach of the Pitmen Igor Jovicevic fielded almost the same starting eleven that started the encounter in Warsaw a week ago: appearance of Dmytro Topalov in the left winger position was the only change. Team captains Taras Stepanenko and Steve Mandanda exchanged bouquets of flowers in the colours of Ukrainian and French flags before the meeting.

The hosts’ pressure and Traore's disallowed goal

The French started very actively and kept the Pitmen’s defence under pressure. In the match opening, Anatolii Trubin saved Gouiri's threatening attempt from the corner of the penalty box and then parried Spence's shot under the near post. Truffert had two good opportunities during a few minutes, but his first shot was unsuccessful and the second one was blocked by the goalkeeper of the Orange-and-Blacks again. The Ukrainian side managed to move the game from their goal only in the middle of the half, creating own chances at the same time. Powerful shot by Yukhym Konoplia from the right corner of the penalty area was turned for a corner by Rennes keeper. Traore got his bearings in the penalty area after this set piece and scored, however the referee ruled out a goal due to handball from Bondarenko, who was assisting the Burkinian. The hosts responded with another lunge: Majer shot below the crossbar – Trubin carries out one more save. Closer to the break, the teams calmed down the game a little and postponed the solution of all issues until the second half.

The French forced the clash into extra time

After the game resumed, the Miners tried to take the ball under their control, but conceded almost immediately: Toko-Ekambi hit the corner of the opponents’ goal after Gouiri’s pass and opened the score in the 52nd minute. Doku and Kalimuendo could have developed success of the French outfit: the first shot went wide and the second attempt was blocked by Bondar just in time. The Pitmen responded with a fast attack: Konoplia finished delivery from the left near the far post, but the full-back’s attempt was denied by Mandanda. Generally, having reached parity, the opponents began to act more cautiously, and the danger at the goal decreased. Igor Jovicevic refreshed the line-up with substitutions fielding Neven Djurasek and Danylo Sikan. The forward quickly found his chance, but failed to finish Zubkov's cross to the penalty box. Theate had the opportunity to seal the win in regular time, but Trubin pulled his attempt with a rebound. So, it was 2-2 on aggregate, and the showdown continued in extra time.

Incredible Trubin and confident Kelsy

In the additional 30 minutes, the hosts had the initiative and managed to score the second goal in the 106th minute: Doku passed from the right corner of the penalty area and Salah sent the ball into the unguarded net. Sikan could have levelled the score, however he fell down in the box after Konoplia’s pass instead of shooting. On the 111th minute, Venezuelan forward Kevin Kelsy made his debut for the Orange-and-Blacks subbing in. And it was in the struggle with him few minutes before the final whistle when Rennes defender Belocian sliced the ball into the back of his own net and saved the Miners. 3-3 and it means a penalty shootout.

Doue and Nazaryna score with the first shots. And then Trubin takes two shots in a row – from Doku and Meling – with excellent jumps to the right corner. At the same time, Sudakov and Bondarenko leave no chance for Mandanda. However, the drama continues to grow. Gouiri and Theate convert their attempts, but Bondar shots off target and Sikan hits the crossbar. Omari and Konoplia perform successfully. And, finally, the outcome. Anatolii Trubin blocks Ugochukwu’s attempt and Kevin Kelsy makes a powerful shot in the bottom corner brining a victory to the Pitmen.
