On January 20, Shakhtar played a test match against a bronze winner of Austrian championship, Austria Vienna

In the first friendly game of 2023, Igor Jovicevic deployed two different line-ups in each half. In the first half, the team was led by goalkeeper Oleksii Shevchenko with the captain’s armband. Newcomer Giorgi Gocholeishvili came on the left defensive wing, young Marian Faryna and Eduard Kozik appeared at centre-back, and Bohdan Mykhailichenko appeared on the left. Yehor Nazaryna, Neven Djurasek and Oleh Ocheretko played in the middle of the field. Andriy Boryachuk and Andriy Totovytskyi played as attacking wingers, Andrii Kulakov performed the role of central striker.

Opening half

The Miners started the match controlling the ball, and during the first half they tried to play from a position of strength. Andriy Totovytskyi, who turned 30 today, was active in the beginning: at first, the birthday man’s shot was blocked by the Austrian defender, and then the sharp pass of Shakhtar’s number 7 was not converted by the partners at the time. Yehor Nazaryna also tried to force a long-range shot, but missed the target. But the opponent took the chance. In the 24th minute after a corner the ball bounced to James Holland, and the Australian opened the scoring with a kick into the left corner from outside the penalty area. Until the end of the half the Orange-and-Blacks continued to combine and search for ways to approach the gate of Früchtl, but they did not create dangerous moments.

Bondarenko scored the first goal of the year

During the break the coaching staff of Shakhtar changed the composition of the team, giving the playing time to the maximum number of players. Already in the first minutes Dmytro Kryskiv could increase the score, but after he flicked the ball, it flew over the crossbar. Then Danylo Sikan (goalkeeper closed the near corner in time) and Oleksandr Zubkov, who shot from penalty area in Früchtl’s hands, created threat to the goal of the Austrians. After resisting the onslaught, the Violets responded with their own moments midway through the first half. In the first case, Anatolii Trubin denied a close-range effort, and then Tabakovic shot above the target from a great position. And yet, in the 72nd minute the second ball flew into the gate of the Orange-and-Blacks: Florian Kopp headed the corner delivery cross right home to the near post. But Igor Jovicevic’s side did not give up, and in the 79th minute the players managed to reduce the gap: Yukhym Konoplia burst in from the flank and earned a spot-kick, which was converted by Artem Bondarenko with an excellent kick to the right top corner. In a few minutes Konoplia and Zubkov put Sikan in one on one; Danylo kicked the ball over the keeper, but missed the target. Even Trubin went to the last corner in the game and almost scored, but it was not possible to equalize the score. 1-2 – Shakhtar lost to Austria in the test game.

With this match, the Miners complete the first training camp. After the weekend, the team will return to Turkey and continue preparations for the spring part of the season. Igor Jovicevic’s lads will play the next friendly match on January 27 against the Slovenian Koper.
