On July 13, Shakhtar played a test match against the Champions of Greece, AEK
In the second friendly match of the summer training camp, head coach of the Miners Patrick van Leeuwen chose the following starting line-up: Denys Tvardovskyi played in the goal again, Mykola Matviienko (captain) and Valerii Bondar appeared at centre-back, the wings were given to Giorgi Gocholeishvili (right) and Viktor Korniienko (left). Trio of young players, Danylo Udod, Denil Castillo and Anton Hlushchenko, played in the centre of the field, Oleksandr Zubkov and Dmytro Topalov acted as wingers, and Kevin Kelsy had a central forward position.
Before the start of the match, a Ukrainian girl named Veronika performed the Anthem of Ukraine, and Shakhtar players came on the field with the national flags. The teams also paid a tribute to the victims of the Russian military aggression in Ukraine with a moment of silence.
The half in favour of the opponents and mutual send-offs
The Athenians, who came on the field with the main team, started more actively and tried to act as leaders. Already in the beginning, Zuber went to the goal in the centre, but Tvardovskyi managed to save his shot. And in the 12th minute, the Greeks took the lead: after an attack on the left wing, the teammates passed the ball to Levi Garcia, who made a one-touch shot into the net of Shakhtar from the centre of the penalty area. In a few minutes, there was an unusual episode for friendly matches: the referee sent off AEK midfielder Amrabat for a foul and subsequent conversations and did not allow a substitution, so the Eagles remained in the minority. The Orange-and-Blacks tried to move the game to the opponent’s half of the field, but they did not manage to create danger near the goal of Athanasiadis. But the opponents repeatedly threatened with sharp counterattacks – Tvardovskyi saved Shakhtar twice after long-range shots. In the 28th minute, Shakhtar player was sent off: Danylo Udod received a red card after the second booking, and the teams were even. The game calmed down for a while, but shortly before the break, the Greeks doubled their advantage: Levi Garcia received a pass on the right edge of the penalty area, put the ball under his left foot and shot powerfully into the far top corner.
Maximum rotation and playing time for young players
During the break, the coaching staff of the Miners made several changes in the line-up, so goalkeeper Tymur Puzankov, defenders Yaroslav Rakitskyi, Eduard Kozik, Marian Faryna, midfielders Oleh Ocheretko, Bohdan Viunnyk and forward Danylo Sikan were released for the second half. At the start of the half, the young goalkeeper of Shakhtar was in the spotlight. At first, Puzankov managed Jonsson’s one-on-one, and then did not allow Eliasson to score. The Orange-and-Blacks regained the initiative: Rakitskyi used his signature long diagonal passes to look for the teammates in free zones, but he did not manage to develop an attack. And the opponents again took full advantage of the opportunity and scored the third goal in the 65th minute: Garcia challenged for the ball in the penalty area and beat the defender and the goalkeeper of Shakhtar, scoring a hat-trick. Patrick van Leeuwen gave the playing time to all players who were included in the squad list, gradually releasing young Yevhen Yanovych, Viktor Tsukanov and Anton Drozd. However, only Matias Almeyda’s team scored today: in the 83rd minute, Zine headed the cross from the right wing home to the far post, and in the 86th minute, he netted a brace, shooting into the net from the centre of the penalty area. 0-5 – Shakhtar lost to the Champions of Greece, AEK, in the friendly match.
