Shakhtar goalkeeping coach Dennis Gentenaar spoke about his role in the staff, work with young players of the Miners and tasks for the season
– Dennis, we continue introducing the new coaching staff to our fans. Can you say a few words about yourself?
– My name is Dennis Gentenaar, I am from the Netherlands. I formerly played for NEC Nijmegen, Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, VVV-Venlo, Almere City and ended my career in my hometown at NEC Nijmegen. Later, I became a goalkeeping coach – first at the amateur level, and then at the Ajax Youth Academy. More recently, I went to Abu Dhabi to work at Al Wahda, then I moved to Maccabi Tel Aviv where I was in the team with Patrick van Leeuwen. And now I'm here at Shakhtar.
– How did you received an offer to join Shakhtar?
– Patrick told me that he was going to move to Shakhtar and asked if I wanted to join. I thought, talked, of course, with my family about it. I think that Shakhtar is a very nice and big club that plays in the Champions League almost every year. So, it was easy to make this decision for me from a sporting point of view.
– What are your responsibilities in the coaching staff?
– Of course, as a goalkeeping coach, my area of responsibility is the goalkeepers. I will also work together with Andrii Piatov that is very nice.
– Andrii Piatov is a Shakhtar legend. What can you say about him and have you followed his playing career?
– I know that he played for Shakhtar for many years. A few years ago, we played against the Miners with Maccabi in the Europa League and met there. Since Shakhtar was playing in the Champions League, I saw their play and paid attention to the goalkeepers. It is an honour for me to work now with a club legend, but it's also good because we can combine our goalkeeping experience and share it with young keepers.
– What can you say about Andrii's coaching potential?
– His ability to speak naturally and directly with goalkeepers when teaching will help him switch easily from goalkeeping to coaching activity.
– Currently, there both young and experienced goalkeepers at Shakhtar. What is their level?
– We have experienced goalkeepers, of course, but they are all young. They have great potential and good work ethic. We’ll see. We are still in the pre-season and working with them.
– What objectives do you set for yourself in work with the guys?
– As with every coach, the aim is to make your players or goalkeepers better, to help them develop and move on. We want to help them to be the best.
– What can you say about current Shakhtar?
– The playing style that we want to see will be different from the previous one, so we should continue to work on it to make the players feel that this is their own style and that they have to play like that.
