Shakhtar first assistant manager Raymond Atteveld talked about his way in football, working with Patrick van Leeuwen and his goals for the season
– Raymond, we want to introduce our new coaching staff to our fans. Can you say a few words about yourself and what your duties are?
– Okay. My name is Raymond Atteveld. I have a background of a player in various clubs. I have been working with Patrick for about 10 years, so I know him very well. I know his qualities, and he knows mine. I make sure that the players are okay: so that the intensity is high and the tactical situation meets our demands. It is a daily process with players.
– How did you start working together with Patrick van Leeuwen?
– We started at Kairat Almaty. Before that, I knew Patrick from Holland, so we started working together. We went in separate ways from Kairat to Maccabi Tel Aviv. Then I became the head coach of Maccabi Netanya. We got back together again at Zorya. And now we are here.
– What can you say about the first days at the camp and what is the main focus during the training?
– The main focus during the pre-season is to make sure that the player get fit. And always, when you start at a new club, you need to understand the level of footballers. Here, we noticed that this level is a little bit different from last year in terms of physical performance and intensity, so we have to step it up. We have three and a half weeks of pre-season to get them ready for the first game.
– How do you see Shakhtar under your leadership?
– Shakhtar became the champions last season, so this is something that we want to repeat of course. It would also be nice to go as far as possible in the Champions League. It is important that we get the players to understand how we want to play: intensity of the game, pressing, that we are in charge of every game of the season.
