Shakhtar defender helped the youth team win
Georgia U21 got off to a start at the domestic European Youth Championship. The Georgians sensationally beat Portugal U21 (2-0) in the first round of the group stage. The main events happened at the end of the first half: Giorgi Gagua opened the score in the 37th minute and Saba Sazonov doubled the hosts’ lead in the 45th minute. Georgiy Tsitaishvili, familiar to Ukrainian fans, assisted in both goals.
Giorgi Gocholeishvili appeared on the field after the break, replacing forward Giorgi Guliashvili in the 56th minute. In the second half, the Georgians focused exclusively on the defence of their own goal and successfully coped with it, not allowing the opponent even to decrease the lead and preserving the victory.
Thus, Georgia U21 topped Group A alone. On June 24, Ramaz Svanadze’s outfit will play against Belgium U21 in the next round.
