Ukraine U21 met with Spain U21 in the final Euro 2023 group stage round 3
Both teams secured their place in the tournament playoffs in advance, therefore the coaches were able to conduct a wide line-up rotation. Two Shakhtar representatives – midfielders Dmytro Kryskiv and Oleh Ocheretko – played for the Blue-and-Yellows from the first minutes.
The Spaniards started more actively and created two dangerous chances at the start, but Neshcheret managed to deal with both of Camello's attempts. Gradually, Ruslan Rotan's side levelled the game and began to disturb the opponents’ defence more often with their own attacks, opening the score at the end of the first half: in the 43rd minute, Nazarenko broke through down the right flank and performed a cross to the centre of the penalty area where Shakhtar Academy graduate Bohdan Viunnyk (he spent last season on loan for the Austrian Grazer) headed the ball into the net, making it 0-1.
However, after the break, Spain came back thanks to an own goal: in the 49th minute, Syrota kicked Riquelme's cross to the penalty box clear and hit Zhelizko from whom the ball flew into the net of the Blue-and-Yellows. In general, the Spaniards had a noticeable advantage in possession in the second half, but without particular danger. In the 73rd minute, two more Miners entered the game, Heorhii Sudakov and Danylo Sikan, who almost immediately orchestrated the second goal. In the 81st minute, Sikan was brought down by the goalkeeper in the penalty area and Sudakov converted a penalty shooting into the lower right corner, making it 1-2. Unfortunately, we did not manage to preserve the victory, Ruiz saved the Pyrenees side in the last minute of regular time.
2:2 – Ukraine U21 tied with Spain U21, advancing to the Euro 2023 playoffs from the second spot with 7 points.
Ukrainians will find out their opponents in the quarter-finals on the evening of June 28. It will be the team that will take the first place in Group D (France U21, Italy U21 or Switzerland U21). The quarter-final game with participation of the “Blue-and-Yellows” will take place on July 2 in Cluj, Romania.
