Shakhtar met with Kryvbas on the Premier League MD17

The Miners spent 15 hours travelling from Warsaw to Kryvyi Rih after the difficult Europa League match against Feyenoord and had almost no time to prepare for the UPL match. However, head coach of the Pitmen Igor Jovicevic did not change the starting line-up completely compared to the previous game, but rotated some positions: Valerii Bondar, Yukhym Konoplia and Bohdan Mykhailichenko returned in defence, with Neven Djurasek acting in the midfield centre and Danylo Sikan being in the central forward position.

Overcoming resistance of the opponents

The picture of the entire meeting became clear from the first minutes: Shakhtar control the ball and the game, being mostly in the opponents’ half, while Kryvbas defend in numbers near own goal. Such tactics worked for the hosts in the first half – the Orange-and-Blacks didn’t have many chances despite the big play advantage. During the opening minutes, Sikan was late on Zubkov’s pass, Sudakov's long-ranger was blocked by Sarnavskyi and Bondarenko’s finishing went high. Djurasek had the best opportunity, but he lacked just a few centimetres to finish a top-level cross by Mykhailichenko.

Sudakov’s winning shot and Kelsy’s first goal

The Miners started to play more aggressively in attack after the break, gaining a corresponding result. In the 58th minute, Heorhii Sudakov received the ball in the left corner of the penalty box, made a few steps to the centre and irresistibly struck into the near top corner to make it 1-0. Igor Jovicevic made a series of substitutions to keep the pace fielding Nazaryna, Kryskiv, Kelsy, and Shved, who organized two more goals against the Kryvyi Rih side. The Venezuelan forward made a dangerous attempt close to the post at the beginning and netted his first goal for Shakhtar in the 80th minute: Sudakov and Shved orchestrated a great move, Heorhii passed to the penalty area centre where Kevin Kelsy handled the ball, turned around and slotted it into the net – 0-2. In less than five minutes, Kryskiv beat the opponent on the flank, approached the penalty area and rolled the ball to Marian Shved who scored his first goal after returning.

3-0 – Shakhtar defeated Kryvbas and became the sole UPL leaders, having 39 points and being 3 points ahead of the nearest opponents.

On March 16, the Miners are to play the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 return leg against Feyenoord in Rotterdam. The meeting at the Stadion Feijenoord (De Kuip) kicks off at 19:45 Kyiv time.
