Shakhtar hosted Feyenoord in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 first leg in Warsaw

Head coach of the Miners Igor Jovicevic applied forced rotation in the defensive line, fielding Lucas Taylor (on the right), Dmytro Topalov (on the left) from the first minutes, and Yaroslav Rakitskyi played at centre-back paired with Mykola Matviienko. Dmytro Kryskiv also returned to the starting XI and took the left winger position again.

Cautious game before the half-time

The beginning of the match was quite balanced. The teams held the initiative in turns and exchanged attacks, but there were few dangerous moments. The Dutch team created the first sharp situation, but Stepanenko prevented Szymanski from shooting properly. Gradually, the visiting team took over the territory and controlled the ball for a longer time. However, Shakhtar defenders led by the captain acted clearly and reliably. The Miners tried to respond with rapid counterattacks. During one of them, Sudakov decided to make a long-range shot, but the ball flew past the left post. The final part of the half went under the pressure of Feyenoord: Trubin managed Szymanski's shot, and Hartman missed the far corner while falling.

Rakitsyi's goal and eventual draw

The second half also started from the goal-scoring moments of the Rotterdam team. At first, Danilo completed the pass from the left side from the goalmouth, but Trubin reacted and saved the Orange-and-Blacks. After this, Jahanbakhsh almost hit the left corner from the edge of the box – the ball went centimetres from the post. In order to revive the team, Igor Jovicevic made substitutions after an hour of the game, fielding Neven Djurasek and Kevin Kelsy, and in the 77th minute, the long-awaited return of Marian Shved took place. In the middle of the half, the Miners managed to push the opponents away from their half of the field and moved forward more actively. Eventually, this series of attacks on the gate of the Dutch team ended with such a necessary goal: in the 79th minute, Sudakov took a corner-kick from the left flank to the near post, and Yaroslav Rakitskyi literally dived under the low ball and cut it into the goal – 1-1. The Rotterdam team rushed to fight back, and while Jahanbakhsh and Geertruida did not hit the corner from a few metres, in the 88th minute Bullaude responded to a pass from the right and headed the ball against the goalkeeper, equalizing the score.

1-1 – Shakhtar and Feyenoord end the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 with a draw. The return leg will take place in Rotterdam in a week, on March 16.

And next Sunday, on March 12, the Miners will play a match of the 17th round of the UPL against Kryvbas. It will kick off at 14:00.
