FC Shakhtar CEO Serhii Palkin reflets on the club’s decision to buy the VAR system
– Lately, much has been said about refereeing in the UPL. A huge stream of negativity, unclear refereeing decisions every round that not only reduce the already low interest in our football, but completely kill this interest. Referees and their controversial cards, penalties, goal disallowing confidently came to the forefront of expert comments. We already know names of the referees better than names of the opponents’ players. And if we talk so much about arbitration, let's face it: there is a clear problem here.
What shall we do? One of the solutions we see is the systematic use of modern VAR technologies in all UPL matches. Of course, the VAR is not a magic pill, but today it is already a mandatory necessity recognized and used in most football championships around the world. All clubs need to be on equal terms and it is essential that the VAR works at every match.
Therefore, FC Shakhtar decided to purchase two VAR vans to be given to the UAF for officiating the UPL matches next season. Both vans will be purchased using UAH 60 million that we promised earlier to support Ukrainian football.
I hope that sufficient number of the VAR vans will significantly reduce the number of refereeing scandals and allow the use of video technology in every match. Let's talk about football again, not football referees and their mistakes.
