First official match of FC Shakhtar took place on May 24, 1936

How it all started

Mykola Naumov was the organiser and the first coach of Shakhtar. The Miners made their debut in the Top League before the outbreak of World War II. After the liberation of Donbas from Nazi troops, captain Heorhii Bikezin put together a new team, which won the bronze medals in the USSR Championship in 1951. In 1961 and 1962, Shakhtar won their first trophies – the USSR Cups. The 1970s and 1980s, when the Orange-and-Blacks won the championship three times (1975, 1978, 1979), and also won two Cups (1980, 1983) and the USSR Super Cup (1984), became a bright chapter in the club’s history.

Modern era

The first trophy since independence was the 1994/95 Ukrainian Cup, but it seemed impossible to challenge for the title for a long time. Everything changed in 1996, when Rinat Akhmetov became FC Shakhtar president. It marks the beginning of the golden era in the history of the club, which continues to this day. During this time, the team became the champions of Ukraine 13 times, won 13 domestic Cups and 9 Ukrainian Super Cups, achieved the biggest victory of modern Ukrainian football – the UEFA Cup (2009).

Today, Shakhtar is a top Ukrainian club, a regular participant of the UEFA Champions League, the team that are known and respected throughout the football world. The club’s mission is to represent the country internationally, as well as to do everything to help Ukraine and Ukrainian people to win our main victory.

We congratulate veterans of different generations, players and coaches, employees, club president Rinat Akhmetov and all fans on 87th anniversary of Shakhtar! Each of you has made a significant contribution to the team’s achievements and is involved in the story of success of the Miners. All of you will always be part of big Shakhtar family!

Happy birthday, Shakhtar!
