Ukraine national team defeated Malta away in the Euro 2024 qualification match
Head coach of the national team Serhii Rebrov applied extensive squad rotation compared to the previous game against North Macedonia (2-0). The starting line-up of the Blue-and-Yellows included two Shakhtar players: defender Mykola Matviienko and midfielder Heorhii Sudakov.
The match started unexpectedly: already in the 12th minute, Mbong shot accurately from the penalty area and gave the host team a lead. Ukrainians spent the entire first half looking for goal-scoring opportunities and managed to convert them before the break. In the 38th minute, Sudakov entered the penalty area from the left wing and shot into the far post, and the ball bounced into the net from the foot of Maltese Camenzuli – 1-1. And after a few minutes, Mudryk earned a spot-kick, which Artem Dovbyk converted – 1-2.
The beginning of the second half passed at a slow pace and with almost no intensity near the goal of both teams. Sudakov made a signature long-range shot – Maltese goalkeeper saved his team. In response, Trubin made a save after a dangerous shot by Nwoko. In the middle of the half, three Shakhtar representatives were released: defender Yukhym Konoplia, midfielder Yehor Nazaryna and winger Oleksandr Zubkov. The Blue-and-Yellows continued to control the game and naturally strengthened their lead: in the 85th minute, Mykhailo Mudryk hit the right corner with a long-range diagonal shot. 3-1 – Ukraine national team defeat Malta.
Serhii Rebrov’s team have 13 points after 7 matches and are in the second spot in Group C table. The Blue-and-Yellows are 3 points ahead of Italy national team (who have a game in hand), whom they will face in the last round of the group stage on November 20.
