Shakhtar youth team lost to Barcelona in the third round of the UEFA Youth League
Head coach of Shakhtar U19 Oleksii Bielik chose the following line-up for the match against Barcelona U19: Kravets played in the goal, Drozd and Sheleketa were full-backs, Oharkov and Dankovskyi appeared in the centre of defence, Losenko, Tsukanov and Bundash acted in the middle of the field, attacking wings were given to Hlushchenko and Yushchenko, and Pushkarov had a central forward position.
Defensive play
From the first minutes, Barcelona U19 played in Shakhtar’s half of the field and acted sharper. The Catalans used wing attacks, and Daniel Rodriguez created a particular threat to the goal of Shakhtar U19, and while the set-piece shot hit the goalkeeper, in the 15th minute Darvich was pursuing rebounds after his run – 1-0. The host team acted as leaders, and when they lost the ball, they immediately started pressing, were proactive and covered free space; the visiting team mostly played defensively and counterattacked. In the middle of the half, the Miners moved the ball to the opponent’s half of the field and made the first long-range shot thanks to the efforts of Losenko – it was saved by the goalkeeper. At the end of the half, the referee awarded the set piece for a foul by Tsukanov, it was converted by Rodriguez above the target; in response, the Orange-and-Blacks attacked on the right wing, but no one responded to Drozd’s cross.
Unconverted chances
During the break, Oleksii Bielik revived the centre of the attack with a substitution: Demchenko replaced Pushkarov on the field, and Hlushchenko moved to the left wing. At the start of the second half, Shakhtar U19 acted aggressively and pressed in the opponent’s part of the field; in the 49th minute Tsukanov made a dangerous shot from outside the penalty area – Yaakobishvili saved the team. In the 69th minute, the Orange-and-Blacks could have equalised the score when Drozd made a cross towards Demchenko, but the forward missed the ball. In the 73rd minute, after Sheleketa’s cross into the penalty area, Smetana shot, the ball hit the defender. In the final stretch of the match, Barcelona U19 started to control the ball and performed a series of attacks, Shakhtar U19 played closely to the attacking players, but in the 85th minute, the Catalans doubled the score: in the central part of the field, Rodriguez regained the ball, dribbled it to the wing and flicked it to Hernandez, who then headed the ball past Kravets – 2-0. Shakhtar U19 lost to Barcelona U19 in the away match.
On November 7, Shakhtar U19 will host Barcelona U19 in the next round in Norderstedt.
