Shakhtar hosted Obolon Kyiv in Lviv in the match of the 7th round of the UPL

Goalkeeper Artur Rudko, who recently joined the team, made his debut for the Miners, and another Shakhtar newcomer Stav Lemkin also came on at the start for the first time and played in the centre of defence together with Yaroslav Rakitskyi. Heorhii Sudakov returned to the starting eleven after recovery.

Unrealised game advantage

The Orange-and-Blacks seized the initiative from the beginning of the match and after a short scouting began to threaten the opponent's goal from time to time. After receiving Sikan’s cross on the left wing of the penalty area, Kashchuk failed to beat the goalkeeper, and then Sikan himself headed the ball past the post after Sudakov’s pass. Number ten of Shakhtar had a chance to open the scoring, but Rybka saved Heorhii’s long-range shot. Patrick van Leeuwen’s lads had the best opportunity to score in the middle of the half, when Zubkov hit the near post with a powerful shot from the right corner of the penalty area. And in the 33rd minute, Obolon remained in the minority: Kyiv team midfielder Vovkun received a second yellow card for a rough tackle against Sikan and was sent off. Immediately, the Miners created several more moments: Sudakov’s free kick was saved by Rybka, and Konoplia’s shot from a tight angle hit the goalkeeper.

Downpour of moments and Nazaryna’s winning shot

The beginning of the second half was simply crazy on both sides. Initially, the crossbar saved Shakhtar after Lukianchuk’s shot, to which the host team responded with three goal-scoring opportunities: after a corner cross Sikan shot into the unguarded net, but the defender of Kyiv team cleared the ball off the line; then Sudakov hit the far post with a shot from the left half-space, and in the next attack Konoplia shot straight into Rybka from advantageous position. In the 55th minute, the Miners could have counted on a spot-kick when, after Stepanenko’s shot, the ball hit Obolon defender's arm, but referee Mykola Balakin did not dare to award a penalty kick after reviewing VAR. Patrick van Leeuwen made a series of substitutions, releasing Kelsy and Newerton, as well as Nazaryna and Viunnyk a little later, and in the 74th minute, Brazilian Eguinaldo made his debut for Shakhtar. The moments near the goal of the visiting team continued to emerge regularly: Konoplia scored near the upper 90, Kryskiv’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper, and Kelsy’s header missed the near corner. The Orange-and-Blacks managed to score their goal in the 77th minute: Azarov passed to Yehor Nazaryna in front of the penalty area, and the latter put the ball under the post with a powerful long-range shot – 1-0. At the end of the game, Eguinaldo could have scored, but his attempt was blocked by the opponent.

1-0 – Shakhtar defeat Obolon and hold the lead in the UPL with 17 points.

On September 19, the Miners will start the Champions League group stage. Patrick van Leeuwen’s team will host Porto in Hamburg. The game will kick off at 22:00 Kyiv time.
