Shakhtar hosted Porto in Hamburg in the match of the 1st round of the Champions League
Goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk returned to the starting line-up of the Miners, left back Novatus Miroshi made his debut for the club, while Stav Lemkin and Yaroslav Rakitskyi made a central defensive tandem. Yehor Nazaryna appeared in the centre of the field, Danylo Sikan played on the left attacking wing, and Kevin Kelsy had a central forward position.
It should be noted that 46,729 spectators attended Shakhtar's first match at Volksparkstadion.
Kelsy's goal and 3 conceded goals
The match started with incredible attacks, and 3 goals were scored already in the beginning. In the 8th minute, the Portuguese opened the scoring: Riznyk saved Franco's long-range shot, but no one prevented Galeno from pursuing rebounds. Shakhtar responded quickly: in the 13th minute, Rakitskyi executed a spectacular diagonal pass to the right wing, where Zubkov passed the ball to Konoplia, who made a cross to Kevin Kelsy from the goal-line, and the forward headed the ball under the post – 1-1. However, in 2 minutes, the visiting team took the lead again: Galeno intercepted Sikan's unsuccessful pass, entered the penalty area and made an accurate low-driven shot. Then Riznyk saved the host team after Jaime's kick. Still, in the middle of the half, Porto extended their lead: in the 29th minute, Galeno shot from the left edge, and Taremi made a one-timer into the far corner. Kelsy had a chance to net a brace, but in the first episode he was a little late to receive Miroshi's pass, and then the defenders did not allow the Venezuelan to turn Zubkov's cross home.
The half on an equal footing
The second half of the game started with a dangerous shot by Nazaryna – it was saved by Costa in the near corner without problems. Riznyk also responded with saves, managing the shots by Eustaqu and then Franco almost from the same position – the right edge of the penalty area. The Miners had the opportunity to reduce the gap in the score when Sikan passed the ball to Zubkov at the right edge of the penalty area, and Oleksandr's shot under the post was also saved by the goalkeeper of Portistas. The pace of the game was somewhat disrupted by a series of substitutions in both teams – Shakhtar fielded Azarov, Kashchuk and Bondarenko in the 65th minute, and later –Gocholeishvili and Eguinaldo. In the final stretch of the match, Zubkov had another chance – he shot into the near corner again, but Costa saved the team this time too. Sudakov and Eguinaldo made attempts to score, but both times they were blocked. 1-3 – Shakhtar lost to Porto.
The Miners will play their next away match of the Champions League on October 4 against Antwerp. Ahead of this meeting, Patrick van Leeuwen’s team will have a series of matches in domestic competitions, the nearest of which is the UPL game against Rukh, which will take place in Lviv on September 23 at 19:00.
