The captain of the Miners passed the grandmaster milestone

The match of the Ukrainian Cup Round of 16 between Veres and Shakhtar was the 400th anniversary game in the jersey of the Orange-and-Blacks for Shakhtar midfielder and captain Taras Stepanenko.

The beginning of the journey

Stepanenko moved to Shakhtar in May 2010 from Metalurh Zaporizhzhia and made his debut for the Miners immediately winning the trophy – on July 4, 2010, in the victorious Ukrainian Super Cup match against Tavriia (7-1), Taras came on as a substitute in the 58th minute instead of Tomas Hubschman. The midfielder scored a goal in his first match in the Champions League against Partizan (3-0), and on April 17, 2016, he played his first game as a captain in the UPL against Olimpik Donetsk (3-0).

14 seasons, 6 coaches, 23 trophies

The new season was Stepanenko's 14th season at Shakhtar. During this time, the team had 6 different coaches: Mircea Lucescu, Paulo Fonseca, Luis Castro, Roberto De Dzerbi, Igor Jovicevic, Patrick van Leeuwen. Together with the Miners Taras won 23 trophies: 9 titles of the Champions of Ukraine (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023), 7 Ukrainian Cups (2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) and 7 Ukrainian Super Cups (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2021).
