Shakhtar played against Veres in the Ukrainian Cup Round of 16

There were several changes in the starting line-up of the Miners compared to the last UPL game: Konoplia and Azarov operated as full-backs, Chyhrynskyi (team captain) and Miroshi played in the centre of defence, Nazaryna was a holding midfielder, Kashchuk took the right winger position.

A minimum of moments and no goals before the break

From the beginning of the match, the Miners had the initiative, but Rivne team ran out performing dangerous counterattacks: during one of them, Iago shot over the crossbar from outside the penalty area, and later Sharai shot into the right corner, but Riznyk played reliably. Towards the middle of the half, Shakhtar pressed the opponent to their goal and started to create their own opportunities. The teammates led Kryskiv to the goal with a cool combination, his close-range shot was saved by the keeper of the host team. Then Dmytro got another chance to score from the penalty area, but this time his attempt was blocked by Rivne team defender’s tackle. Even the central defenders of Shakhtar played high in the opponent’s half of the field: in one of the episodes, Miroshi found Kelsy in the penalty area with a cool cross, but the forward failed to shoot effectively – above the target.

Goals by Kashchuk, Bondarenko and Ocheretko and Stepanenko’s 400th match

During the break, the coaching staff of the Orange-and-Blacks made a double substitution, releasing Sikan and Zubkov to strengthen the attack. Oleksandr immediately led Konoplia to a shooting position, but Yukhym’s shot was blocked by the opponent. Patrick van Leeuwen’s side were in possession of the ball almost all the time and combined around the penalty area of the host team. Azarov created a good opportunity when he broke in from the left wing and passed the ball to Kashchuk in the centre of the penalty area, but the latter shot over the goal. And yet, in the middle of the second half, Shakhtar found their chances and took them. The scoring was opened in the 65th minute: Miroshi regained the ball, Azarov passed to Bondarenko, who put Oleksii Kashchuk in one on one, and the winger shot under the far post from the left corner of the goalmouth – 0-1. And 3 minutes later, Artem Bondarenko scored the second goal himself: the midfielder picked up the ball in the centre of the field, beautifully outplayed the opponent and threw the ball behind Kohut with an elegant chip shot – 0-2. After that, the game slowed down, and in the 76th minute, a significant event took place: Taras Stepanenko entered the field, it was his 400th match for Shakhtar in all tournaments. However, Rivne team became more active in the final stretch and tried to equalise the score: Riznyk saved the team after a shot and deflection from Chyhrynskyi, and Kukharuk shot over the crossbar from the penalty area. Shved could have scored, but he missed the far corner during one-on-one. However, in the next attack, Shakhtar secured a crushing victory: Sikan challenged for the ball in the penalty area and shot into the goalmouth, from where Oleh Ocheretko made a one-timer into the net of the host team.

3-0 – Shakhtar defeat Veres and advance to the Ukrainian Cup Last 8 (matches of this stage are scheduled for November 1).

And this Saturday, September 30, the Miners will face Vorskla in the next UPL round. The game at Arena Lviv will kick off at 17:00.
