Shakhtar played the away match against LNZ Cherkasy in the 26th round of the UPL

Head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Marino Pusic made several changes in the starting line-up compared to the previous game: the team were led by Taras Stepanenko with the captain’s armband, Yukhym Konoplia and Pedrinho appeared on the defensive wings, Kevin and Oleksandr Zubkov acted as wingers this time, and Danylo Sikan had a central forward position again.

Unstoppable Sikan scored in the fourth game in a row

From the start of the meeting, the Miners acted as leaders, but the beginning of the match had one memorable and unpleasant episode: Shakhtar midfielder Artem Bondarenko was injured in the beginning, and in the 9th minute he was replaced by Marlon Gomes. The host team kept Shakhtar at a distance from their own penalty area for a long time through smart defence and high pressing, but in the second part of the half, Marino Pusic’s team managed to create several dangerous moments and finally score. First, Sikan hit the goalkeeper after Zubkov’s pass from advantageous position, and in response, Eynel shot near the post from outside the penalty area. The scoring was opened in the 40th minute: Kevin beat opponents on the left wing and made a convenient cross to the far post, which Danylo Sikan turned right home with a header – 0-1.

Crushing victory with goals by Sudakov and Eguinaldo

After the break, the host team also started playing more actively in the attack: after Rybalka’s cross, Pedrinho almost deflected the ball into his own net – the post saved the team, and a complex shot by Jashari was blocked by Riznyk. But the Orange-and-Blacks managed to score again in the 62nd minute. Marlon Gomes dispossessed Rybalka of the ball in front of the penalty area of Cherkasy team and passed to Heorhii Sudakov for a shot, the latter left no chance for the goalkeeper – 0-2. The coaching staff of Shakhtar revived the attacking line with a double substitution, releasing Traore and Eguinaldo. The Brazilian could have scored almost immediately, when he made a low-driven shot into the far corner from the right edge of the penalty area, but the ball went in centimetres from the post. The host team also had their chance – Boiko shot powerfully into the near corner after a good combination, but Riznyk saved the team. The final stretch was full of goal-scoring opportunities that occurred only near the goal of LNZ. Traore shot over the crossbar after Eguinaldo’s pass. Sudakov first tried to kick the ball over the goalkeeper, but Kucherenko reached the ball, and then Heorhii almost hit the left top corner from the penalty area with a long-distance shot. At the end of normal time, Traore and Sudakov led Eguinaldo to a shot – near the post. However, the stubborn winger managed to score in the second added minute: after receiving the ball on the left wing of the penalty area, Eguinaldo played one-two with Traore and hit the far corner.

3-0 – Shakhtar confidently defeated LNZ and continue to lead in the UPL with 61 points.

Next week, Marino Pusic’s team will have 2 meetings with Chornomorets Odesa in the Ukrainian League. The matches will take place on May 1 (at 13:00) and May 5 (at 18:00) at Livyi Bereh arena in Kyiv.
