Shakhtar hosted Rukh in the match of the 23rd round of the UPL

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic applied minor squad rotation compared to the Cup match which was held on Wednesday. It should be noted that captain Taras Stepanenko was came on in the starting line-up, Oleksandr Zubkov returned to the right attacking wing, and Lassina Traore appeared in the central forward position.

A symbolic first kick in the match was performed by defender of Ukraine Andrii Kovalchuk, call sign Donbas. He is a representative of Shakhtar ultras, a soldier of the 12th Special Purpose Brigade Azov of the National Guard of Ukraine.

Bondarenko fires a brace

The Orange-and-Blacks had a tangible initiative from the first minutes and created several sharp moments already in the beginning. At first, Lviv team goalkeeper Ledvii saved Zubkov’s shot and managed Traore’s follow-up, and in the next episode, another attempt by Oleksandr was blocked by the defenders. The goals did not take long with such a game, and the score was opened in the 8th minute after a beautiful team combination: Sudakov found Traore with a splitting pass, he passed to Zubkov in the centre of the penalty area, the latter then left the ball to his teammate with his heel, and Artem Bondarenko hit the right corner with a low-driven shot – 1-0. And in the 16th minute, Shakhtar double their advantage: Bondarenko then passed through the right flank on his own, moved to the centre and, without meeting any resistance, put the ball close to the post with a powerful shot – 2-0. Rukh recovered closer to the middle of the half and made several dangerous attacks: Pastukh headed after Liakh’s pass – it was not a problem for Riznyk, Didyk tried to score from a distance – also into the goalkeeper’s hands. However, in the 36th minute, the visiting team managed to score one goal: Talles received the ball on the right wing of the penalty area, adjusted the ball for a shot and hit the far top corner. A minute before the break, the Miners had an opportunity to regain an upper hand when Sudakov curved the ball under the post from the penalty area, but Ledvii reached and saved his team.

Nerve-racking half with a goal finish by Zubkov

During the break, Marino Pusic made one substitution, fielding Eguinaldo, but the Brazilian was quickly injured, and already in the 57th minute, Marian Shved replaced him. At the same time, Sikan replaced Traore. The beginning of the second half of the meeting was quite cautious from both sides: Shakhtar deliberately let the opponent possess the ball in order to gain more space during the counterplay, but Rukh were in no hurry to go forward forcefully. The host team created a dangerous situation near their own goal themselves, giving the ball to Talles, but Riznyk saved the Brazilian’s shot from a tight angle. In response, Sikan missed the target from advantageous position. However, in the 76th minute, the Orange-and-Blacks managed to score for the third time and take the question about the winner of the match off the table: Ledvii saved Azarov’s shot from the left corner of the penalty area, and Oleksandr Zubkov was the first to pursue rebounds. Immediately after that, the author of the goal was replaced on the field by Marlon Gomes, who also had a chance to score, but he failed to beat the goalkeeper in a close duel.

3-1 – Shakhtar defeated Rukh and continue to top the UPL standings with 49 points.

Marino Pusic’s team will play the next match of the championship in a week. On April 14, the Miners will play an away match against Vorskla Poltava. It will kick off at 13:00.
