Shakhtar hosted Bayern in the UEFA Champions League league phase MD 6 game
Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic fielded the following line-up for the key match: Riznyk played in the goal, Bondar and Ghram appeared in the centre of defence Konoplia and Matviienko acted on the defensive wings, Marlon Gomes, Bondarenko and Sudakov played in the middle of the field, Zubkov and Kevin were the wingers, and Sikan took the central striking position.
The match gathered 57,079 spectators in the stands of the Arena AufSchalke, which is a record for home games in the history of the Donetsk club.
Kevin opened the scoring, but then we conceded twice
The teams started the match extremely intensively and exchanged not only moments, but also goals already in the opening stages. The Miners were the first to score in the 5th minute: in a quick vertical attack, Zubkov led Kevin to the goal with a splitting pass, and the Brazilian beat the goalkeeper with a shot into the right bottom corner – 1-0. However, in the 11th minute, Bayern equalised the score, when Laimer made a powerful close-range shot almost under the crossbar. Sudakov could have regained the lead almost immediately, but his long-range shot missed the post. In the middle of the half, the visiting team had the initiative, but the defence of the Pitmen acted quite reliably and did not allow to create intensity near Riznyk’s goal. Sane’s attempt was blocked by the defenders, and Olise shot above the target from a good position. And Marino Pusic’s team had a chance to take the lead again at the end of the half: Bondarenko launched a counterattack, Kevin rolled the ball from the left edge to the centre of the penalty area, but Sudakov’s one-touch shot was unsuccessful – the ball went past the right corner. And Bayern converted their chance in the last minute of the half: they forced the host team to make a mistake by pressing, and Thomas Muller beat the goalkeeper from the centre of the penalty area.
Chances for the Pitmen at the beginning of the half, but the opponent scored
During the break, the coaching staff of the Ukrainians made two substitutions, fielding Kryskiv and Traore. The Miners started the second half of the match strongly and created several dangerous chances. First, Traore received the ball in the centre of the penalty area, but the forward’s shot was blocked for a corner. And after the corner, Bondar was ready to score from the goalmouth, but Muller kicked the ball out from under the feet of the defender of the Pitmen at the last moment. Bayern responded with a powerful long-range shot by Goretzka – Riznyk blocked a difficult attempt. But in the middle of the half, the Germans significantly intensified the situation, made several sharp attacks and finally scored the third goal: in the 70th minute, the referee awarded a very questionable penalty for a supposed foul by Ghram, and Olise shot into the top corner without a chance. Soon after, Zubkov could have reduced the gap, but Bayern goalkeeper Peretz saved his shot. Towards the end of the match, Marino Pusic released the Brazilian trio – Pedrinho, Eguinaldo and Newertton. Pedrinho had a good opportunity, but his shot under the post was saved by the goalkeeper of the visiting team. Eguinaldo also had a chance to score, but his long-range shot was blocked by Peretz as well. And the opponents scored twice more at the very end: in the 87th minute, Musiala received the ball in the centre of the penalty area and, waiting out, shot past the goalkeeper; and in the added time, Olise passed the entire defence and netted a brace. Shakhtar lost to Bayern 1-5.
The Miners will play their next Champions League match on January 22, 2025, when they will host French Brest in Gelsenkirchen.
Next Sunday, December 15, Marino Pusic’s team will play their final match of this year. Shakhtar will face Polissia away in the UPL game. The encounter in Zhytomyr will kick off at 18:00.
