Shakhtar faced Polissia away on the UPL MD 17

Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic chose the following starting line-up for the final match of the year: Riznyk played in the goal, Konoplia and Pedro Henrique appeared on the defensive wings, Matviienko and Bondar played in the centre of defence, Kryskiv, Bondarenko and Sudakov acted in the middle of the field, Zubkov and Kevin were the wingers, and Traore took the central striking position from the first minutes.

Few moments and lack of goals before the break

The beginning of the meeting passed at a slow pace, it took the teams a long time to get used to difficult weather conditions and the winter pitch, there were much more fouls and pauses than attacks. Among the Miners, Zubkov tried to create intensity when he made a long-range shot past Kudryk in one of the episodes but missed the goal, he slightly missed Sudakov’s pass at another moment. Traore could have completed another dangerous cross, from Pedro Henrique, but he also missed by a few centimetres. The host team created their own opportunities towards the end of the half as well: Riznyk saved the team first after Hutsuliak’s shot, and then from Pedro Henrique’s play, and after that, the Pitmen were saved by the crossbar that took Kushnirenko’s shot.

Scoring chances at the beginning and end of the half and a goal from the opponent

The second half started with the attacks of the Miners. Zubkov and Bondarenko played a combination in the penalty area, but none of the teammates managed to complete it. In a few minutes, Sudakov was in a good position, but the shot was unfocused. Kevin had a good chance when he moved from the wing and shot into the near corner – the ball went close to the post. In the middle of the half, the pace was again thrown off by numerous fouls and substitutions. The Orange-and-Blacks fielded Pedrinho, and Marlon Gomes and Sikan appeared closer to the end of the game. In the last ten minutes, the Pitmen looked more proactive: no one managed to turn a series of sharp crosses home, Sudakov’s shot was blocked by the defenders, and Sikan was the closest to the goal, but he sent the ball next to the post after the wing cross by Marlon Gomes. Instead, the Zhytomyr team fully converted perhaps their only chance: Mykhailichenko hit the bottom corner from the penalty area in the first minute added by the referee. 0-1 – Shakhtar ended the football year with a loss to Polissia.

The team are going on vacation, and they will start preparing for the January matches in the Champions League at the beginning of 2025.
