Oleksii Drozdenko is a graduate of Donbas football, he started his sporting career in his native town Chystiakove, played for the reserve team of the Miners, and made his debut in the first eleven of Shakhtar Donetsk in 1962. He played for the team as a defender for 11 seasons, made 165 appearances. He was included in the list of 33 best football players of the Ukrainian SSR three times. In 1971–1972, he was the captain of the Orange-and-Blacks.

After finishing his football career, he was a member of the coaching staff of the Pitmen (1979–1983, 1989–1994, 1997–1999, 1999–2002), was the caretaker coach of Shakhtar (October – November 1999), worked at the Children and Youth School and the Academy of the Miners (1975–1978, 1984–1988, 2004–2008).

FC Shakhtar expresses sincere condolences to the family and friends of Oleksii Mytrofanovych Drozdenko regarding this heavy loss. He forever inscribed his name in the history of Donetsk football and remains in the hearts of millions of fans of the Miners.
