Shakhtar faced Marseille away in the UEFA Europa League knockout round play-off second leg

The teams tied in the first meeting in Hamburg a week ago (2-2). Head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic made only one forced substitution in the starting eleven for the second leg: experienced Yaroslav Rakitskyi appeared at centre-back instead of disqualified Valerii Bondar.

Sudakov and Aubameyang exchanged goals

The teams were very active from the beginning and created first chances already in the opening minutes. First, Eguinaldo run down the left flank, played one-two with Zubkov and shot – the ball was blocked by the defender. The French side responded with Gigot’s attempt following a corner kick – over the crossbar. Sikan had a good opportunity when he volleyed into the far corner – Lopez pulled it, not letting Eguinaldo finish. And yet, it was the Miners who managed to open the score in the 12th minute: Eguinaldo earned a penalty, dribbling on the left flank of the penalty box and forcing Clauss to foul, while Heorhii Sudakov converted it, sending the ball and the goalkeeper wrong way – 0-1. Marseille footballers tried to fight back with all their might and achieved their goal in the 23rd minute: Harit intercepted the ball near the penalty area of the Ukrainians and passed to Aubameyang who hit the near corner. Kondogbia followed this with a dangerous long-ranger, but Riznyk parried it. The teammates created a chance to take the lead again for Sikan (Sudakov orchestrated an attack, with Eguinaldo crossing to the penalty area), but the forward hit the net from the outside. At the end of the half, the hosts looked more ambitious, but their pressure did not give any results. And already in the stoppage time, each team created a scoring opportunity: the ubiquitous Eguinaldo headed the delivery to the right post – Lopez pulled the ball from under the crossbar, Harit responded with a shot from 12 meters – above the target.

The opponents used their opportunities

The second half began with Shakhtar’s attacks: Konoplia cleverly found an open space in the penalty area and shot from tight angle – the defenders cleared it from the goal-line, then after a corner kick, Yukhym headed it from the goalmouth in challenge with the defender, but miraculously missed the target. The Olympians immediately responded with a double chance: Clauss's powerful shot with bounce from Azarov passed just few centimetres from the post, with Moumbagna heading into the centre of the net after a corner – Riznyk saved. Towards the middle of the half, the teams lost their pace a bit and began to act more cautiously, not taking risks and waiting for their chances. And in the 74th minute, the hosts managed to take advantage of such opportunity: after a long ball, Aubameyang flicked it on to Sarr who fired it home from close range to give Marseille the lead. Rakitskyi could have equalized immediately: the defender of the Pitmen rounded the wall, but Lopez blocked his attempt. And in the 81st minute, the opponents scored for the third time. Kondogbia received the ball after a cross from a free kick and rolled it into the unguarded net. Marino Pusic responded with five substitutions, fielding Newertton, Pedrinho, Kryskiv, Shved and Traore, but there was not enough time and energy to break the game. 1-3. Shakhtar lost to Marseille, finishing their European campaign.

On Monday, February 26, Shakhtar will resume the season in the domestic arena. Marino Pusic’s men will face Oleksandriia on the UPL MD 18. It kicks off at 13:00.
