Shakhtar fitness coach Roel Tambeur talked about his impressions of work at the club, his role in Marino Pusic’s staff and the team’s readiness for the second part of the season
– Roel, you started working at Shakhtar in the autumn. How was the adaptation during this period and what are your impressions of working at the club?
– Everything is great! When I first arrived, many things were new to me, I didn't know what to expect. But from the first minute, the medical and technical staff, everyone in the club made me feel good, offered help. It was very nice. I saw how professional and big this club is in every aspect, I really liked it.
– Tell us about the specifics of your work and your duties.
– I am a fitness coach, performance coach – there are many names. My duties include warm-up during training sessions, preparation of exercises together with Mister. It is very important to avoid extensive or insufficient intensity, so there is an individual load plan for each player. We created it at the beginning of the training camp and are constantly increasing the workload so that the players get used to it. These are the things on the pitch. We also do a lot of analytical work and train in the gym. We try to prepare the players as best as possible to reduce the risk of injury and improve their performance on the field.
– You always try to vary the training process and add something new. This is what is visible from the side. How do players react to this?
– In my opinion, if you constantly do the same, footballers can get bored. It is one of the reasons why we try to make the process interesting, to give more motivation. The more changes we make, the more effective the session will be. We do this to better prepare the players physically.
– Your responsibilities also include working with the Catapult system. Tell us about this field of activity.
– We have a plan for each player and each training session: how much we need to run, how many times we need to change direction, how many sprints we should run, what is the maximum speed of a football player. We make a plan before training, work and sometimes change certain things in the process: somewhere it is necessary to add and somewhere to reduce the load. It is very important to know these indicators in order to be able to make some changes to the programme.
– What is the atmosphere in the coaching staff?
– I cannot complain. I think we have the perfect combination. We work hard when practising on the field or preparing something. The process is well-organized, you can feel professionalism in everything. And in the evening we have time to rest and relax. A good combination.
– What is the team working on at the training camp and how do you assess the level of the players? What can you say about their physical fitness?
– We gradually increased the workload and intensity of training in the first two weeks of the winter camp, it is a very important process. The next two weeks were spent with more frequent and longer sessions in order to prepare the players as much as possible for the Europa League matches and the championship.
– What would you like to say to the Ukrainian fans?
– I hope everyone will be able to watch our games and enjoy them. And we will try to win!
