On July 20, Shakhtar played a test match against English Ipswich

Head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Marino Pusic fielded the same line-up that started the previous friendly match against Besiktas: Riznyk played in the goal, Vinicius Tobias, Bondar, Matviienko and Azarov appeared in the defence, Bondarenko, Marlon Gomes and Sudakov acted in the centre of the field, the wings were given to Zubkov and Kevin, and Traore played at the helm.

Equal half, when the opponent was lucky to score

The starting stretch of the game was dominated by the Miners, and they even managed to score already in the beginning, when Traore turned Kevin’s cross right home, but the referee did not count the goal due to offside. The Donetsk team continued to be in possession of the ball, Kevin was active, but it did not lead to the moments. Gradually, the Englishmen seized the initiative and approached Riznyk’s goal dangerously several times: in one of the episodes, Chaplin could have scored, but his shot from the centre of the penalty area was blocked by Azarov. In the middle of the half, the teams exchanged mistakes in front of their own goals, which led to goal-scoring chances. First, Zubkov intercepted a pass back from the defender of the Blues and elegantly kicked the ball over the goalkeeper – the ball hit the crossbar, from which it flew off a metre away from the goal line. But Ipswich took their chance: after an unsuccessful play by the Orange-and-Blacks in the penalty area, the ball bounced to Morsy, who opened the scoring with a powerful shot from 20 metres into the left bottom corner. Marino Pusic’s side immediately rushed to fight back and moved to the opponent’s half of the field forcefully. Kevin and Sudakov were constantly looking for the ways to intensify the situation, however, their passes and crosses through the dense defence did not reach their teammates. However, Traore was close to turning one of Heorhii’s crosses home, but the opponent was ahead of the Burkinabe for a moment.

Permanent pressure of the Ukrainians, but without conversion

After the break, Shakhtar line-up was completely changed, except for the right defensive wing, where Vinicius Tobias stayed in his position. The Miners immediately started to attack with energy. Shved moved closer to the centre with quick dribbling and shot from outside the penalty area – the English goalkeeper saved it not without difficulty. Then, Pedro Henrique put Eguinaldo in one on one with a cool splitting pass, the latter beat the goalkeeper, but his attempt to shoot from a tight angle was blocked by the defender. The Pitmen continued to control the game completely and move forward. Shved made several dangerous crosses to the penalty area, and Bartol Franjic led Newertton to the goal with a great long ball, but the Brazilian did not manage to respond to the pass. The Croatian newcomer of the Orange-and-Blacks also distinguished himself near his own goal, when he cleared the ball off the line after a shot by Ipswich player Luongo. The Donetsk team had a great chance to equalise the score in the 78th minute: Pedro Henrique rushed through the left wing and perfectly rolled the ball to the penalty area line for Eguinaldo’s kick, but his shot went a few centimetres above the crossbar. Pedro Henrique himself could have scored in the last minutes, but the Brazilian and Shved prevented each other from turning the cross home to the far post.

0-1 – Shakhtar lost to the EPL representatives Ipswich in the test match.
